Depends really. Do they think that Clarke and Symonds are good enough spin options. If they do, Noffke for mine as he replaces Hogg's batting (and is a better batsman anyway). A actual spinner, I wouldn't be surprised to see Hauritz given another go.

1. McGain
2. Hauritz - has been there and has done OK
3. Cullen - not until he stops pulling his sleeves up

Doherty has impressed me of late too - Tassie need to pull their finger out and play him in the Milky Cup.

That will probably rule the Scottsdale lad. Its hard to justify playing anyone in a national team when he's not picked in both forms for his state.

They can certainly experiment a little for one day cricket. Results are meaningless at this point, and the world cup is 3 and a half years away.

For test cricket, with MacGill's fitness and longevity questionable, things are much tougher. Nobody has strung together a few seasons worthy of contention, it would probably have to be Hauritz.

You do realise Hauritz doesn't play 4 day cricket for NSW? Test matches will be McGill and Bryce McGain.

Looking at that list I am not feeling particularly inspired at all. Then I have to remeber we have been spoiled with spinners for a few years now.... I can hear where people are coming from with McGain, but he will only be a stop gap measure, for the long term I am leaning towards Xavier Doherty.

I dont see the need for a specialist spinner. Hogg wasnt a strike bowler like Warne but could be fair economical.

My team after this series.

Jaques
Hayden
Ponting
Clarke
Symonds
Hussey
Haddin
Noffke
Lee
Johnson
Bracken/Clark

When Hayden retires, open with Jaques and Clarke, Put D Hussey to number 4, he can also roll the arm over.

Awesome Batting, 4 great bowlers, 10 overs of part timers.

Have a spinner capable of scoring runs in the sqaud for when there is a turning pitch.

Won't happen. 10 overs of part timers equals 10 overs of 80-100 runs, that's why they love Hopes.
Good Point, but with batting down to 8, that extra 30ish (hopefully a lot more) runs would be scored by a batsmen.

Clarke and Symmo would go for less than 60 most games.

Our problem this series has been our batting, we have bowled awesome without much contribution from Hogg. We need a team that looks capable of scoring 300 plus a game again.

cricket is not just a batsmens game..... although bowlers dont really have much chance anymore due to shorter boundaries, change of ball and flat wickets are just some examples of modern day cricket....

I think if they pick a Batsmen it will be an opener to replace gilly. Clarke has been far too valuable where he is.

P Jaques, come one down

I think a fair few people dont actually realise just how good Hoggy was in the ODI's. Perhaps its his test form that puts people off but Hoggs stats compared to Warnes are almost identicle.

Wickets Per match:
Hogg: 1.3
Warne: 1.5

Average:
Hogg: 26.73
Warne: 25.73

Econ Rate:
Hogg: 4.52
Warne: 4.25

The thread about Hoggs retirement is pretty shocking considering he is up there with out greatest ODI bowler.

Yes..but let me remind you we have had to watch Hogg bowl more meat pies that I had seen before against India. I really am not sad that I won't have to watch him pretend to be a test cricketer anymore.

Jaques is hopeless in the field
He isnt the greatest, but he is an opening Batsmen. He doesnt need his fielding to subsidise his batting. He is competent and thats all that should matter, good fielding should be an added bonus not a pre-requisite

I agree that he was not up to test standard but he was a massive part of the ODI team.

True, and wish him the best in retirement, however not seeing his name in a test squad means we have a better chance of winning!

The Australian selectors think otherwise, fielding has always been a huge priority for picking sides especially since the late 90's.

That's a very good point. Jaques may well get in at some point on his batting alone given how good it is, but he's just gotta work on his fielding cos it could hurt his chances.

Exactly, I see Jaques replacing Hayden maybe, but not Gilchrist. It completely wrecks the balance of the side with two specialist openers in the side.

Don't pick a spinner just for the sake of it if nobody's worthy of the role.

Hayden
Hopes
Ponting
Clarke
Symonds
Hussey
Haddin
Noffke
Lee
Johnson
Bracken

Bats down to Noffke @ 8, plus Lee and Johnson who are handy.

4 specialist fast bowlers, 1 medium pacer and 2 part time spinners.

The only problems I see without a specialist spinner are 1) lack of variety, and 2) problem with over rate.

This is true and the value of 5 bowlers who you can count on for 10 overs should not be underestimated.

Since Hopes's recall mid-07, opposition teams have averaged just 212 (not counting rain-affected games).

Partly coincidental because of the good bowling of others and pitch conditions in Australia but also due to not having a weak 5th bowler, with Hopes consistently delivering in most games.

No teams scored more than 300 against Australia since before the world cup (Watson was the 5th bowler in the world cup). India's scored 299 twice since but lost both times.

Selectors won't go back to 4 bowlers and fudging the remaining overs from part-timers by dropping Hopes for Jaques.

I think Hogg will be replaced by either a genuine spinner like McGain, another bowling all-rounder like Noffke, or just playing 4 quicks from #8 to #11 like Bracken, Lee, MJ and Clark.
