Who will be our new coach next year?

All this talk about Buckley merits the following question.

Do you guys recall why he got sacked last yr and how the pies have bounced back with McRae?

That’s my only concern, can’t knock his footy brain

One of the biggest issues with Buckley was he became a very defensive coach and for long periods of his tenure struggled to move the ball from the back half.

Braden Quartermaine: If Adam Simpson returned home to coach North Melbourne it could be a win-win-win

It’s said there’s only two types of coaches – those who have been sacked and those who will be sacked.
There’s actually a third. A tiny minority who see the chance to jump before they get pushed and take it.
They might ultimately get sacked in another job one day, but they at least seize control of their destiny for the time being.

Ange Postecoglou did it. The former Socceroos boss walked out on Australia after qualifying for the 2018 World Cup, went from strength to strength in Japan and Scotland and will next season guide champions Celtic in the Champions League.

And in the soccer world coaches can come back from being sacked countless times. In the AFL industry, only a few ever get a second crack after being dismissed.

It’s why Adam Simpson should think long and hard about North Melbourne.

Loyalty is a great quality and his existing contract at West Coast runs for two more seasons. But if the Eagles have a repeat of this season next year, there will be no loyalty to the contract on the club’s behalf. Simpson will be gone.

It wouldn’t necessarily make him unemployable as a senior coach, but it would leave an inevitable black mark against his name and his 2018 premiership would be a further year back in the rear-view mirror.

Should he jump to the Kangaroos at the end of this season, where he could return ‘home’ as a former captain and 306-game club legend, he could probably get a four-year deal.

The Roos are a mess and if we needed any reminding that came on Saturday night with a 112-point thumping at the hands of Geelong.

Simpson’s proven ability to build strong relationships with players after arriving at West Coast makes him an ideal candidate to heal his broken former club.

North Melbourne are in their third season of completely bottoming out, but rather than gradual improvement they are worse than ever.

In 2020, they had three wins in a shortened season to finish 17th with a percentage of 71.2.

In 2021, they finished last with four wins and a similar percentage of 70.3 in David Noble’s first season in charge.

After 16 rounds this season, their only win in round two came with a huge asterisk against a West Coast outfit topped up with WAFL players. And their percentage is a pathetic 49.5, with fewer excuses than the Eagles have.

But the most acute pain of an agonising rebuild will surely have passed if a new coach takes up the reins from 2023.

The Roos will take their third consecutive top-three pick in this year’s national draft and it will likely be a second straight pick one after drafting Jason Horne-Francis last year.

If Noble is removed and another coach comes in and makes progress in 2023 and 2024, there’s no guarantee Simpson will ever have the chance to coach North Melbourne again.

At West Coast, the rebuilding hasn’t even really started. The Eagles have the second-oldest list in the competition and have not used a top-10 draft pick since taking Andrew Gaff in 2010.

Revelations of a fresh approach from North Melbourne to Simpson were awkward for the Kangaroos given they have a coach in place. But if they’re not chasing options such as Simpson and Alastair Clarkson then they’re not doing their job.

Simpson would be going from one end of the financial spectrum to the other if he crossed to the Kangaroos, though in the era of tight football department soft caps that’s not the decisive factor it might once have been.

Of more concern to any prospective North Melbourne coaching target would be the recent upheaval in the club’s recruiting department and whether there is enough stability there.

Ross Lyon decided to take his career into his own hands in 2011 when he crossed from St Kilda to Fremantle.

Simpson could move from the Eagles to the Roos without any of the clandestine manoeuvring that marked that bombshell switch.

The potential for a win-win-win means negotiations could be conducted openly and professionally between all parties. Simpson could get long-term security, North Melbourne a premiership coach and West Coast a fresh voice to lead the rebuild without having to pay Simpson out.

Should Simpson remain at Lathlain as expected, the Eagles will need to be very careful. Because his natural inclination next season will be to chase results to earn himself an extension.

If the rebuild is to start properly, the focus should be longer term.

The board will need to place some very well thought out parameters around how Simpson will be judged. And that must be about more than win-loss, otherwise an apparent revival on the back of fitter senior players in 2023 could prove short-term fool’s gold.

Why not. It's not like things could get any worse :-D (now there's a bloody jinx if ever I heard one)

Pretty clear from the tone that plenty of WA people think Simpson has little left to offer and would like us to take the problem off their hands.

I’m hearing that Simmo is very interested in coming to us, as it looks like he might be given the flick from the Eagles.why aren’t we in Clarkos ear now? Looks like the Giants will have a 2nd meeting with him.

I'm not sure whether he should be the coach, but I suspect he has learnt a lot seeing how differently the Pies have played under the new and fresh approach of McRae. Their list is not all that much different to what he had at the Pies, but I think he might be realising that he had them playing a far too defensive style of game.

You are dreaming if you think clarko would entertain (even for 1 second) coaching us.
Simmo is our best hope, and thats only if he gets the flick from west coast, and even then he would enquire about the GWS job first.

Most coaches wont touch us, not even unproven ones.

Really . Do you even suppose North or are you just an imposter. He’ll coach North . Deals been done . 😏😉

Something I agree with!

That bloke had a premiership team and couldn't even beat one of our youngest teams under Brad Scott!
Buckley won’t coach again you don't have to be Albert Einstein to work his in love with the media and the media loves him.
Plus what he had at Collingwood he knows he won’t get anywhere else as Eddie had everything laid out for him From $$$$,Player Talent and BS Hype to succeed and he failed.
Mind you the pressure he was under as coach plus having the most important job in football to do by putting Eddie Electric Blanket on 3 every night would put any man under pressure.
