What does aggression have to do with leading people?

Alot...Lead by example etc etc..One of the Best captains game I have ever seen, and others have commented on, was Roo V Carlton, Princess Park 2002. One of the best examples of a Captain physically intimidating the opposition to get his team over the line.

Ahh ... I would have thought as a young player he was concentrating on getting the processes right before taking on sides.

I have noted on here before watching him at Subiaco round 22 last year and how he was the General of the backline

Don't get me wrong, I love Rutten as a player. As far as our structure is concerned, he's probabaly one of our most importnat players, if not the. I just don't think he is AFC captain material.

I was just kidding SC

I think Adelaide lacks a replacement just yet. I realise that we have a few v.good prospects BUT when Roo was out injured we really lacked the player who pulled the team over the line (eg kick the captains goal) I reckon VB might be close but he still makes mistakes (like missing tackles) which is expected for a 2nd year player.

I was a fan of Rutten as captain but I am not convinced that he is the ideal leader just yet.

I don;t think Roo will be handing in the captaincy in this year.

Let's hope not mate.

Roo will play for 2 more years and hand over the captaincy for the 2008 season.

I reckon Marty Mattner could get it

The Best Captain in the AFL Mark Ricciuto will continue on with the captaincy! His leadership qaulities are unbelievable

He will - no doubt about it.

We are very lean on quality players with leadership qualities that will be around the 25 to 26 year old range in season 2008.

Rutten, Reilly and Thompson represent just about all of the likely suspects IMO, with Reilly my preference if he has a good 2007.

van Berlo is a near certainty to succeed whoever is appointed after Roo. Pity he'll only be 21 at the start of the 2008 season.

I thought you guys saw Thompson as a major candidate?
He has it all (A bit TOO aggressive at times, but thats Thommo) and although he had a quiet year he'd surely be up there for 2008 wouldn't he?

Many here like Thommo as captain material.

The only question mark for me is consistency of performance and maturity not to get sucked in by the opposition. He needs another couple of years before we can make a judgement IMO....and with some quality mids coming through - his First 22 status could be tested in 2007.

Absolutely ludicrous, something that is becoming more common on this board nowadays. People have gone so overboard with Thompson's "bad form" this year. He averaged 18 possessions per game in 2005, up to 20 this year. Sure he didn’t kick as many goals and probably wasn’t quite as damaging, but people sure do run with wild theories.

Wishful thinking ;)

He is a walk up start in our 22.

Read it again in the context of the whole sentence......

The point of the sentence is the quality mids coming through - Porps, VB, Knights, Douglas.

He will have to perform more consistently to hold these guys off.

I’ve read it about 5 times now, want me to keep going? It was rubbish the first time and it’s still that way.

And seriously, Thompson would be the third midfielder I pick, all of those bar VB are miles off where Thommo is.

More like those boys would have to play exceptionally well to push him out.

Thommo is in our best 22 and while he has had somewhat of an indifferent year, he is a class player that will be there every week.

I would say there would be others that would go before Thommo. He will get better and he does have a habbit of lifting when the chip are down ;)

Chad Gibson Board....

did I say will be pushed out ?

no - I said could

there will be a fair bit of pressure on Thompson and Reilly next year. Of our midfield group they are the least consistent performers and if players of the Knights and Douglas ilk are to get game time - they will feel the pressure.

in front of Edwards, Goodwin, or Shirley ?

What is there to suggest Thompson will be pushed out? If his year was as bad as half this board suggests, why on earth wasn’t he pushed out this year?

He’s 23 and entering the prime of his career, I find it extremely unlikely that two unproven players in Knights and Douglas will suddenly push him out. But if that's honestly what you see happening, don't let me talk you out of it.

1. Goodwin
2. Edwards
3. Thomspon

Not such a bad prospect for him to be captain. He has some good captain qualities although as someone mentioned, is a rather shy personality. I like the idea though

you've been around here long enough to know that people here will call for all the young players to be played every week.....if only there were 30 spots on the field....hell.....some even were hell bent on dropping Clarke or Biglands this year to play Meesen on the strength of 2 dozen hit outs and 10 possessions in a bottom 3 side.....

My post was in response to a question on the captaincy. My point was - I think he is not captaincy material yet because he is not consistent enough in application or temperament. If he doesn't even out his performances, and people like yourself get their way with promoting players based on mediocre SANFL performances....Thommo is one of those who COULD be in the gun.

No doubt Roo will continue for another year.

Big question is who will handover to in 2008/09?

Please tell me who I have been willing to promote in place of Thompson? I’ve called for Meesen to be played on more than one occasion, but that didn’t eventuate. But it’s not as though playing Meesen would have cost us a chance at the flag, because we didn’t win regardless.

And if you want players promoted on the back of mediocre SANFL performances, why wasn't Jericho in the side more often when he was fit?

...and that's the sort of logic I'm talking about......."it can't hurt - so why not slash established players and play medicre SANFL ones"
I don't subscribe to that theory as you do.....but players like Thommo could be the victim of that train of thought next year.

I don't want......but there are plenty here that do.....;)

It definately wouldnt be goodwin not because he doesnt deserve it, but he is too old. No point Roo passing the captaincy onto someone who will only have it for a year or two.

The appointment of the next captain must come from the next group of players (Reilly, Rutton, Johncock, Thompson etc). It has to be someone who still has about five or more years left. We just need someone with genuine leadership qualities to stand out over the next 12 months to 2 years.

The honest truth I believe is it there it is waiting for Thompson, but (and this is a big but) he has to step up to the plate and prove to the club that he is a leader on and off the field and earn it.
