When its days away from Gilchrists 35th birthday, im am concerned over the future of the Australian wicket keeper... theres no doubt that within the next few years, Gilly will probably hang up the boots, or just retire from either the tests or one dayers, to slightly lengthen his career...This is where i pose the question, who will be his replacement... over the last few years haddin has done the job when gilly has been rested, but i see him as a quick fix, at the age of 29, with not an overly great batting ability, but good with the gloves... and by the time gilly retires in haddin could be 32 or 33...Should we be looking for youth, or haddin as a quick fix???

Assuming Gilly pulls the pin in the next 2 years, I reckon Haddin is almost certain to get the job.

He could do it for 3-4 years (that's not a "quick fix") and then make way for a young gun who can take over long-term.

Someone like Tim Paine, aged 25-26, could be the next gloveman in 5 years time.

Hartley eventually, best Keeper around by miles. Broke the Pura Cup record for most balls without conceding a bye from memory.

Chris Hartley is probably the best glovemen named, however i don't think he is too strong with the bat.

I wouldn't mind seeing Paine given a go, not sure he would be ready for it 2-3 yrs time.

Indeed Paine has done well with the bat so far this season, no idea what hes like with the gloves though... he might have a bit of trouble with clingeleffer in the side...

do we now place to higher expectations on our wicket keeper to make runs... Gilchrist was a once in a lifetime player...

It is between Paine and Hartley for me. Paine is a serious talent and can make huge scores as we have just seen, but not sure on his glovework, havent really seen him in action enough. I know Hartley's glovework is very crisp but batting not as strong.

Haddin may get a fill in role if Gilly departs b4 either of those younger two are ready.

Hartley and Crosthwaite will have to improve their batting drastically if it to be them. No use being a gun keeper if you can't bat, just ask Darren Berry. Paine can seriously bat, and Ronchi is a useful hitter, so I'd put those 2 ahead at this stage (to take over from Haddin, most likely )

I will offer anyone odds of 1000-1 on it being Clingeleffer or Manou.

Gilchrist, I think will retire from ODI's at the end of the World Cup to prolong his test career, Brad Haddin will do a superb job with the gloves, and batting at 7, but, I am more concerned about the opening batting in ODI's when Gilly retires.

Haddin at the moment, is the best wicket keeper in the domestic game, and Chris Hartley, Tim Paine and a few others have a good fight on their hands for a future spot.

I think Gilly will take the decision away from the selectors by retiring from ODI's, but I also do think if he doesn't, he should be told to step down to prolong his test career, but cant really see the selectors changing it until Gilly can no longer bat or keep, because his knees are wrecked.

People automatically say that he should be dropped from the one day team and kept for the tests but if he keeps up his current form for the Ashes series and World Cup it will have to be the other way around. Since the start of the last Ashes tour, he's been in better form than through his whole career in one dayers and in tests he's only made a 100 against Bangladesh. Here are the stats:

You cant drop gilly from the test team... there is no1 good enough to replace him... haddin is good with the gloves but not a great batsman... the best we could do is replace him with an inconsistent youngster...
