Board,

I was watching on the couch a couple of weeks ago and Chapman was the guest.

A question came up - 'who would you pick to take a kick after the siren?'

Chapman responded he would take the kick himself.

This really impressed me on several levels, that he would back himself and want the chance to do it.

Makes me think that if they asked someone like Pav he would respond with some inane answer like 'Jayden Pitt he is the best kick in the club' or some such bollocks. I doubt he would say himself.

Who would you guys want taking a kick after the siren? Especially after our recent poor set shots.

My pick? Ballatyne. Because he would want to be the guy taking it.

Who else would you pick?

It's sad that you have such a low opinion of our Captain.
At the moment I would pick Mzungu. Great simple kicking action and seems completely un phased by playing in the big time.
Michael Walters would also be a good choice, he's a fantastic kick and has already kicked a great clutch goal under pressure.

I'd pick Pavlich. That behind he kicked against Geelong always gets brought up, but (a) that was a ****ing hard kick and (b) it barely missed.

However if Pavlich was busy - say he's down at the beach taking photo's and walking his dog or something - I'd take one of Mundy or Walters.

The Geelong one wasn't the bad one, it was two others during the season (swans and blues iirc) where he missing crucial shots in the last and we ended up getting rolled.

The point i'm making is that Pav wouldn't say himself. He wouldn't WANT to be taking the shot because he doesn't have that attitude and some might say arrogance.

Walters is another good pick.

My point is if you want to be an elite sportsman you have to be guy who wants to take the key and know that would nail it. I don't think Pav is like that.

Its like who would you give the ball to in the last over of a test match? Warne or Murali - comparible records at test level, but you'd pick Warne, because he would want it more.

I'd bring J-Lo back out of retirement to take the kick.

In all seriousness, Sonny by a country mile.

Pav, not a chance. The Geelong miss is one of about 20 important last quarter goals hes missed in the past few years.

And i pick Sonny not because he is a good user of the footy, but because he is a confident, smug little prick that would back himself in every single time.

Exactly.

Sonny wouldn't feel the pressure because he would just naturally expect to kick the goal. He would,'t even consider the possibility he would miss.

Sometimes clubs can begin to mimick their on field leaders, and i think some of us failing to 'put teams to the sword' falls in Pavs lap - when we get 10 goals up i reckon you can see Pav start to mentally switch off - ie we've done enough. I think it comes from him having spent years carrying the team and not being able to switch off because we were getting pumped

So you're having a go at Pav for being a modest, intellegent guy?
Pavlich, Kepler, Walters, Ballantyne all good options. But I would go Pav (especially if outside 50) just so he could shut everyone up.

Pavlich is also very self aware. If he was asked the same question as Chapman he'd never go the FIGJAM route. He's like a politician. Behind the scenes he'd want to be taking the kick.

He'd be better outside 50, less pressure fo him.

if it was 45 out directly in front or slight angle i'd have

1st pick. mundy
2nd.duffman
on the boundary from close range
1st walters
2nd balla

Yea, fair enough, but he's also a pretty good kick too all the other stuff aside.

Having said that, I'd go something like

Outside 50:
Pav then Keps (actually maybe the other way round mmm ... not sure.)

Inside 50
:
Mundy (though I like the MZu suggestion)

Inside 50 tricky angle
:
Walters

Past Players:
J-Lo

Duffman is another player I'd like to take.

BTW, if Chappy was in our team I'd probably say him too.

Fyfe is another who'd be high on my list. Seems completely unflappable and is already making a habit of going back and slotting clutch goals while the rest of his teammates produce miss after miss after miss.

I like Fyfe's temperament that's true, but he's shown already that he can shank them. In contrast, Mundy, for example, even if he misses doesn't miss by much. He's just got this beautifully dependable kick. That's why I like him. Walters has already got the runs on the board in this regard too and generally is a good kick and has that mental ability that says "I was born for this moment" etc. Pav can boom them and though he's missed a few in his day, his ability to get that long accurate kick in can't be denied, so from distance I like him. All these over Fyfe for mine - maybe a few others too.
