Here's the brief discussion of the coaching situation on Talking Footy (a slightly dodgy video though):
[/quote]

Just following what is shown on the Talking Footy video above, just before the following adv break, Bruce says something like, "coming up after the break, who's the coach of the year... Talking about new coaches". I didn't quite catch it, but the glint in his eye, and his slight smirk hinted that he was dropping a hint re the lions new coach. Did anyone catch what he actually said?

Bruce and Leigh are mates. No doubt there would have been some discussion between them.
I'm not ruling out clarkson yet, I think he'd be perfect for the job. Based on the continual talk that if he's in a position to win another premiership and can't, he'll decide to move on. This year could be it.
If not clarkson, it'll be between Tudor or Richardson. Can't see Goodwin or Simpson getting the nod above those two.

I seem to recall McAvaney and Craig being mates/acquaintances?

As I see it, there are two possibilities of where McAvaney got his info:

- a South Australia connection which would then bring Craig, Goodwin and Richardson into play
- Lethal connection which doesn't narrow the field at all.

I note he didn't specifically refute Stevens' claim that we'd gone cold on Craig.

Knowing our luck we will get Clarkson but three months in he will punch a Gabba wall and subsequently die from a staph infection.

Gee, just a bit morbid there, TBD.
We might be a badly run club, but we haven't managed to actually kill anyone. Directly. That we know of. Yet.

Gallows humour and Simpsons references are all I have left to give.

It was something to the tune of, after the break we will discuss the coach of the year and mentioned its relevance to the Lions. Went on to talk about the premiership coach which I think he was referring to clarkson and also mentioned Hinkley.

While the senior coaching position is obviously a key, what comes with a new coach is equally important, surely.

Recruitment, development, retention etc are just as critical, IMHO. We aren't exactly cutting edge in any of these departments, as recent events have demonstrated, although we've succeeded in bringing on quite a few senior long-termers this past season.

Does anyone recall what Leigh Matthews did here when he took up the reins?

This was the chat:

Mark Stevens: Tell us all about Brisbane though?
Bruce: Uhh.. We've got a commercial break coming up. Thankyou Mark, and after this another debate, just who should be named coach of the year - speaking of Brisbane - and before that we've got finals footy covered here on 7.

I'm reading Leigh's book at the moment, and it seems like him and Bruce are very, very good friends - Bruce actually wrote the forward to the book. I reckon the info would've definitely come from Leigh.

What it does seem though is that we do have a very good candidate lined up.

Or I guess it could mean that Bruce felt the need to defend a process that Leigh is involved in given their friendship. Leigh talks in the book about how he and Bruce speak once a week. They are quite tight, obviously.

Tangentially, when I read Lethal's book, I was struck by how history repeats as well as how mistakes made in his era (note, not necessarily made by him) are still costing us now.

Stevens seems to be assuming that just because he doesn't know what the Lions are doing, it means the Lions don't know what they are doing either.

Not sure I approve of Bruce talking in riddles. Spill something, McAvaney.
He's got nuthin', just likes to appear as though he has somethin'.

Reckon it was as simple as him recognising the process & panel we have in place, the fact that we have interviewed several candidates and can't say or do much more until September is over. 'Brisbane are doing ok' is all he said which given the circumstances, is a better assessment offered by dickhead Stevens.

I've heard that because Stevens can't figure out how to tie his shoelaces himself, he thinks no one is able to tie their shoelaces themselves.

Yeah, I reckon that's what Bruce was calling him out on, more than anything else.

Hoping the Hawks win this Friday so Lethal can continue the interview process;

Scott: "Please Master, I really need the $1.5 million to come back up there...."

Matthews: "Ehhhh, maybe when you're as good as me"

Gee ... you really get the feeling Bruce is onto something here. He's the first commentator with the initials BM who is friends with former Lions great that was also a Hawthorne great since that AFL great was involved in a three-peat to bring news like this.

Stevens ... couldn't quite!

I'm thinking it's more like...

Matthews: "How about 1.5million over the first three years then 600k for the fourth and 700k - of course there is the 50k bonus for every year you make the finals"

Scott: "Please Master, don't humour me, you do know the AFL think we only pull in a tad over 500k for every home game played down here...."

Stevens said something really stupid, and I'm sure McAvaney's natural instinct was to slap him down.

But I don't think McAvaney would say he knew something if he didn't actually know something. He's well beyond having to pretend to be a more important figure than he really is.

Bruce must shudder at what sports journalism has become - people with no clues and no contacts or research on massive money making up random shit and rarely held to account when they are outed as being bullshit artists. More reality on Big Footy than the mainstream media.

Jorgo? Reckon we might have a candidate for post of the week right here.
