I'm pretty excited about our future prospects for that famous of famous positions, but with so many good options on the list who do you think will stake the strongest claim for the spot?

Obviously Hansen is still pretty young and works very well for us, but without being able to string more than a few games in a row (through injury) I reckon there's a good chance another option will emerge as a force this year.

So who will it be?

Brown?
Jones?
Notte?
Staker?
Kennedy?
Hansen?

For arument's sake let's say in 18 months time, who do you think will be the first choice for CHF?

CHF - Kennedy
FF - Q - Beast

Long term defence will include Brown, Mackenzie, Spangher, Glass (3-5 years) & Schofield in varying roles. 2 of the 5 are very much offence orriented (Mackenzie & Schofield) Spangher can do both (Scarlett Style) and the other 2 are very versatile defenders.

Long term this would very much be a 2007 style Geelong defence

I think the real issue will be delivery into the forward line in the future, won't have an issue with clearing the ball from the backline and from contested situations with the likes of Masten, Kerr, Ebert, McNamara, Scott Selwood & McGinnity but I wouldn't rate any of them as great kicks to leading forwards so a couple of outside mids (Butler/Hurn) and some permanent mid sized forwards (McKinley, Hunter & LeCras)

add 60 games to the current squad = premiership

Spangher Glass Selwood
Schofield Brown Mackenzie
Hurn Masten Rosa
LeCras Kennedy McKinley
Hunter Lynch Notte
Cox Kerr Butler

Seaby Ebert Waters Selwood

EMG Staker McNamara McGinnity

or something like that

How "long term" is that prediction ? No place for Hansen in your future plans ?

I just think that with Ash's injuries he will be fast tracked into career coaching rather than try and keep playing while spending the rest of the week in ice baths and working with the physio.

I would love to say that he will have a good pre season and be right to go for the next 5 years but I just don't think that his body will hold up.

I really really hope I'm wrong, very good genuine CHF when fit and would be a major asset to the team if he could play all 22 next year.

Lynch currently is the Best CHF we have. He plays the leading up the ground very well and with his long kicking is a weapon. I beleive the plays CHF better than FF and plays CHF better than Hansen. His long kicking will enable him still to score from further out and his disposal on the run and from long range is usually very good. When he plays CHF or up the ground he regularly gets big stats (20+).

Then Notte will be our leading FF. He is fast, reads the flight superbly, great hands, good shot and snap on goal and is very good below his knees.

Kennedy will play a closer to goal role with his big body and strong marking.

This format has the potential to be a very good forward setup IMO

Kennedy I dont think has the engine to play CHF and doesnt read the play well enough. Swap those two.

Don't think McKinley will ever be good enough, same with Spanger. Seen Mackenzie play a lot and not sure why there is so much hype. Too lumbering to play a back flank.

Much as I might like to say you are wrong I think that you are most probably right ! We need someone who can add another 20 + goals a season either at CHF or, if Lynch moves and his goal production drops to say half of what it was while he plays CHF, someone who can supply the same sort of numbers of goals as Lynch has (50+ per season) at Full Fprward !

lynch should stick to chf, otherwise he'll keep missing those easy goals in front like last season. if chf doesnt work he should be thrown back
I still prefer Lynch at FF.
Yes, he can kick the distance, but I still think he'll kick more at FF, and more than any other forward prospect we currently have at this current point in time.

As for going down back, I don't think he's capable of it any more. I remember watching a game last year where he went down back for a stint and he was behind his man by about 10 meters which resulted in a goal.

If Hansen plays 22 games ANY year just watch and see Acker come out and say he's the next Superman....and he should piss in the bottle.

At close to 200cm you watch Hansen run and see his knee's under the pressure and cringe:eek:

PS: Lynch is our best CHF, Brown on a half forward flank, Kennedy deep with Notte.

Brown is wasted down back.

are Rutten, Glass & Scarlett wasted down back ?

thats the potential with Brown as a defender, Kennedy and Lynch will be easily good enough to produce goals so why not have an outstanding defence instead.

not as glamorous but so damn important to the team and a premiership

I would prefer 30 goals from each of Hunter, McKinley, LeCras & Kennedy + 60 from Lynch while preventing another 60 - 100 goals in defence by having a stronger defence.

This all a long way away and doesn't take into account future recruits, if we did this Just 2 years ago we would have Gaspar and Doogs in the key positions and still be reliant on Judd, Cousins and Kerr doing the entire midfield job on their own

who knows if Hurn wins a brownlow kicking 30 from the midfield in 08 while winning 5 cleanances a game or LeCras wins All Australian as a hard running half forward/midfielder while kicking 50 Luke Power style or Lynchy gets it all right from R1 and kicks 90 and wins a coleman or Glass does a knee and have to fast track the young defenders

never know so I don't like doing anything more than 1 season ahead (less chance of getting it wrong :p)

I was going to say Jako but very good point.

All positions are important, most scoring opportunies are created from the half back line.

The team in 5 years

FB: Nicoski Glass S.Selwood
HB: Waters Spangher Schofield
C: A.Selwood Kerr Butler
HF: Ebert Brown Staker
FF: Kennedy Lynch LeCras
R: Cox Hurn Masten
I/C: Rosa Seaby McNamara Embley

Something like that please. Glass on his last legs rest still a long way to go. Id like to see McKenzie turned into a gorilla FB more then a running defender.
