Why Carlton have been promising so much yet delivering so little for so long.

I think after their last premiership they really struggled to adapt to the draft and salary cap system. They were an arrogant club (don't mean this in a bad way, back then they were good and they knew it which enabled them to recruit the best players). Took them a long time to adapt.

I think they then had a bit of a messiah complex, drafting for Judd as an example. From the outside it looked like they thought all they needed to do was get in the best player and the results would naturally follow

Malthouse (another messiah) also set them back by probably about 5 years, absolute disgraceful what he did to Carlton. All he was interested in was his own personal goals, didn't care what damage he did to the list.

I just can't hate Carlton anymore.
I feel sorry for them.
So many of my Carlton mates have children who have been so demoralised, they changed teams. Mainly to Richmond.
So many wooden spoons. So many number 1 picks. Begging the AFL for assistance....

I'll pray for them.
Thanks, coming from a team who have won 2 flags in 60+ years.

No, we're great at clawing back a deficit, we struggle holding a lead.
That's because you go into your shells by playing not to lose rather than playing to win. Last year the Pies did well in the close ones because they kept pinging it around like the Harlem Globetrotters regardless of the scoreboard or time left on the clock.

You must be laughing through the tears, Arrow.

Laughing at the post actually. Given we are just entering prime years/experience, 2, 1 kick losses last year won't define our capabilities moving forward

Same with the Pies, 2 heartbreaking finals losses under a goal doesn't define you

Nah. You guys shat the bed in the last four rounds last year. We won most of the close ones and were beaten by better teams in the finals.

Yeah coz thats what happened last night lol

That LOB run down the wing and perfect kick inside 50 to McKay in the middle of 3 defenders with 90 seconds remaining just screams "playing not to lose rather than playing to win" :tearsofjoy:

A draw while not playing at our best is a decent result. I'm sure we'll get better as the season goes on.
Yes,both clubs can come away with the same assesment.

Like the Swans who we beat? You shat that game when it was on the line early

Look forward to the Pies winning 11 of 12 games under 2 goals again

And it stands true even to this day (don't know why it was locked though). Walsh is a machine but we did not make the finals, let alone the premiership, with him. Brian Cook is an astute operator and in the last couple of years we've finally started turning the corner off-field so hopefully it'll trickle down to some on-field success.
I don't know why your thread was locked either.

Your opening post wasn't offensive in any way, shape or form. But it was a very accurate post of Carlton's situation at the time.

Good on Carlton in 2005-7 to nail pick 1. But it wasn't the be all and end all.

Teams rebuilding had to nail the late picks as well

Well I can't say much. My team has only been in one grand final. Also.... 8 years of finals from 1995-2022, 8 years of finals in 28 years isn't a lot of positive to look back on.

I would trade some years for a few back to back finals appearances

If I was a blues fan. I would take the draw and move on. Another 22 games to go....

I don't expect blues to get top 4. I do predict them like Freo and other clubs to be in that 5th to 8th finals spot range.

Don't be upset Carlton posting a 14 win, 1 draw and 8 loss record.

That's probably 5th or , 6th and a home final, which is likely an Elim final win and a semi finals exit.

It's way better than 9th to 12th

I still feel sorry for you. Even more so after last night's game. Nice to see your coach was really proud of that effort.

A little like the fat kid who has the training wheels come off his bike at 12 years of age. Still has little control but the bar is very low.

In recent times, one of the big reasons is health. A lot of cap space tied up in perennially injured players. This leads to s**t depth...which means we lose a lot of games despite having a great Top 5 (Cripps, Walsh, Curnow, McKay, Weitering).

I mean despite our vaunted midfield, our wings were cottrell/lob/newnes last year. There'd be VFL teams with similar wing talent.
You do have a point. At one game, it might of been against the dockers, Carlton had 3 of their back 6 out.

Saying that it depends on the situation.

Carlton have 2 very good key forwards. And both won a Coleman medal each.

You can lose one of those KPF blokes for a week with an injury or rest one of they are too sore or battered with the physical style of footy. And Carlton can still field a strong best 23.

Carlton could lose a midfielder for a week or two with injury and still cover them
