Why is Bob Murphy so loved and respected by all?

Murphy was never interested in the captaincy before Griffen took flight. Always led down back and off the field but never aspired to the title.

Only accepted the role when the playing group unanimously voted him in, and he felt some responsibility to a broken club.

Also indicated he'd be willing to relinquish the role for 2017 but the players weren't having it.

Doesn't really mesh with the whole "selfish Bob" horseshit, hey?
Actually he did exactly the opposite.

The 34-year-old told SEN that an announcement had yet to be made but "I will be captain".

Murphy said he wasn't ready to give up the captaincy after only two years, one of which was lost because of the knee injury. He said he could still contribute in a leadership role, especially in helping develop the younger teammates who would eventually take on the role.
Just LOL at replacing the second premiership captain in that clubs history for feel good reasons. Replacing a younger guy who showed superb on field leadership with a guy turning 35 and returning from a serious injury.

Murphy didn't replace anyone .. he was the captain. He wanted to be captain again and the players voted for him as their choice for captain

The idea that he wanted to be captain again when he could have remained a leader behind the scenes and when Wood did such a superb job leading the team onfield to a premiership last season shows a selfish side of him.

Just like when Beveridge did not have his medal handed back to him untill after an apparent rogue request was made for another medal and was subsequently rejected.

Err, no.
Wood has stated publicly that he's very happy to have Bob back in the side as captain.

Did you not know that?

Or for the sake of the story, did you choose to ignore it?

You know, never let the truth get in the way...

BTW, what is this "rogue request" you speak of?

He's behaviour on grand final day maybe viewed as obnoxious and self centred by some. The main reason I'd say

Did the club president not ask for another medal for Beveridge? Then when rejected others at the club made it out like the president made that request without having spoken to anyone else involved about it.

Not everything has to be announced immediately for things to have actually happened or to satisfy the haters.

Bob actually gave Bevo back the medal on the Sunday.

Yes, but that was the president, as you say. "Made it out..."? Do you know something we don't?

Do you think Bob's being selfish because someone else asked for another medal?

Maybe it is just a Bulldogs thing. Asking loyal fans for $150 for a photo with the premiership cup is pretty selfish IMO.

The medal was handed back the next morning, might want to check your facts before making claims.

THE WESTERN Bulldogs will ask the AFL to strike another medal to award its senior coach Luke Beveridge, after he handed his over to injured skipper Robert Murphy during the medal presentation post-Grand Final on Saturday.

President Peter Gordon told 3AW the club would write to the AFL on Monday to consider their request.

"I don't know how the rules of the AFL work in this regard … [but] a deserving and decent thing to do would be to strike another medal and give it to 'Bevo'," Gordon said.

"That would be, I think, the decent thing to do and I think the AFL are composed of decent people."

The call comes after Beveridge won plaudits from everyone for inviting Murphy to the premiership dais after the game to hand him his Jock McHale medal, saying: "This is yours mate, you deserve it more than anyone."

Gordon heaped praise on Beveridge's action saying it was exactly the right way to handle the fact Murphy had missed the game after suffering a season-ending knee injury in round three.

This is an article from 2 days earlier. Gees that handing the medal back story was not at all a way to save face after the AFL rejected the request.

That's my point, it's not for everyone, but you don't have to be a dick about things you don't enjoy.

Words to live by but apparently doesn't apply to posting here

Murphy is our clubs captain. He is admired and respected by all Bulldog supporters. Our relationship with him and the club is defined by us. How we celebrate our victories and with whom is our choice. You don't like it? Switch clubs to us to effect the change you want from within. Otherwise take your ill-informed opinion and keep it to yourself. Just like any committed relationship it is for us to define and our rules to make.

Just like Jobe handing back the brownlow pronto..... yet the afl still don't have it.
The medal has been displayed in the Bulldogs musuem for quite a long time...

Have you ever thought to realise that the situation was between Bevo and Bob? And Peter Gordon was possibly not aware due to craziness that was going on?

Geez some people just can't sit back and recognize a good moment, they have to bitterly analyse every detail in order bring others down. Sad.

I have about 20 mates who have had the photos taken with the cup for free, most in their own homes, a few weeks ago , thousands turned up to the ground over an 8 day period waited patiently, and got it done, for free, so wtf are you talking about.

I understand that you were probably on a multi day celebration bender at that time so your memory may have been impacted.

I can understand the Bulldogs including him in the celebrations but he ultimately contributed zilch to them winning the flag (his absence may have helped). He was as significant as any fan.
AA Captain 3 games before he did his knee. Understandable that your brain cannot process the concept of a jet who can deliver the ball with laser precision off half back when you've had a decade of watching Gilbert and Geary butcher it out of your defensive 50.
