Why the AFL isn't successful.

To answer the question of this thread, it depends on how you measure success.

The AFL as a business is the envy on all other sports in Australia, so yes, in a conventional since it's extremely successful.

The question that we really should be asking is; has that business success made game better?
I for one, am not convinced it has.
Athleticism is often favored over skill
The rules are constantly changing
And the game is sanitized at every possible opportunity.

Is this success?

Footy is simply not a game that needs millions of dollars.

what im saying is a league stadiums hold no more than 20k exept td. and the atmosphere is that much better. all this in only the a-leagues second season. i still beleive with less teams support will make games so much better to be a part of.

Ok. What I'm saying is that these stadiums that can hold 20,000, are still only getting 15,000 fans rock up. Now if i know my maths that means there are still 5,000 seats left. The AFL plays bigger stadiums because it has more fans. Can you imagine a match involving St.Kilda and Collingwood played in a stadium of 30,000 capacity or even less. NO. They are forced to play in a stadium that means they can get a maximul crowd. You're talk earlier about the lack of guarentee of getting in to soccer games is crap. What it suggest is that soccer is getting sellout crowds, but it isn't. Very few clubs are invloved in sell out games. Some struggle to get anyone to come to their games. This is also a stupid statement if there are sell out crowds and no garuntee of a seat as that would mean fans would rock up expecting to have a night out at the soccer and instead get turned back. That would no doubt mean prospective fans would from then on be reluctant to go to the soccer with the knowledge that they might not get in, whilst football, which has good atmosphere, exciting quick games, and plenty of good seats does give them the security of knowing that they will be able to watch a game without being turned back at the gates or sitting through a nil all draw where the only excitement comes from the masses of other bored supporters who shout stuff at eachother. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of soccer. I think its a good game (albeit a little low scoring and frustrating), but to say its already showing the AFL up as not being a succesfully run competition is a joke. the AFL is a much more succesful game than the A-league, and will remain so for a long time, especially when Australias best players go overseas to further their careers whilst with AFL we get to see the best footballers in the world, at home with affordable match's and gurentee that we wont get knocked back from a tiny 20,000 seat "stadium" as the club is used to getting crap crowds and therefore doesn't play in bigger venues.

Look at the aleague.... The AFL is like the cheap banana just something to pass the time. When you see stadiums able to facilitate upwards of 50,000 people and yet only attracting less than 20,000 it is a sign that something has gone wrong. Supply overwhelms demand....

Thoughts.

They should just turn the Ponsford Stand into a refugee camp for illegal aliens, instead of shipping those poor bastards to a prison out in the middle of the desert. We'd get a capacity crowd at the G each weekend and they'd get to abuse Mick Malthouse every other week.

Win. win.

What's that?

They've already turned the Ponsford Stand into a refugee camp for illegal aliens?

Well I'll be f**ked...
