To answer the question of this thread, it depends on how you measure success.
The AFL as a business is the envy on all other sports in Australia, so yes, in a conventional since it's extremely successful.
The question that we really should be asking is; has that business success made game better?
I for one, am not convinced it has.
Athleticism is often favored over skill
The rules are constantly changing
And the game is sanitized at every possible opportunity.
Is this success?
Footy is simply not a game that needs millions of dollars.
