There's a point in that which has been missed in these discussions.

Unless you've lived in the Rugby states you can not comprehend how important the pissing contest around poaching players is.

Until Rugby Union turned professional League had r*ped it for good players right through history. The Union administration delighted in returning the favour after the game went pro - which was a very important element in changing perception after the change.

Which code can entice players to switch is now in some ways a public opinion barometer of success. The PR value for the AFL of pinching a couple, no matter the price, is far greater than most Victorians would know.

Um, isn't the point of a team is to gain sustained success and win flags?

Who poaches who off another code doesn't make supporters happy, winning games, developing good young players and keeping a strong list so you remain competitive does.

And to a couple of the more stupid responses I've read.

  1. The marketing portion these deals is but a portion of it, they are still getting paid top dollar (more than Judd) to actually play and that does come out of the cap.
  2. The salary cap for the new expansion sides does slide back to the same leval of every other side.
  3. Since when do players who never even kicked an AFL footy worth more than Judd or Franklin etc?
Only time will tell.

And exactly how much are they being paid to play football? Or are you just making an assumption?

GWS or Gold Coast could have spent $1m each in marketing and it would have been a drop in the ocean compared to the splash these signings make in rugby league heartland.

The fact is, they've got to get league fans watching the game at all in the first place before they worry about keeping them by winning games.

Um, you've just confirmed the point that unless you've lived there you don't get it.

1. Wrong.

2. And?

3. You haven't read the responses at all, have you?

You are an Idiot, Folau and Hunt have been signed as Rookies.

There millions are outside of the cap initially, and for their first year there is no salary cap. Therefore how are they over the cap, their salaries will drop though.

EDIT: they are also heavily front ended.

Through the pictures and that I've seen Hunt looks like he will have to slim down a bit. He body composition seems to big compared to an afl player

i was thinking..

"Hi I'm Scott Selwood. I want 500k per year over 4 years"

"Hi Scott. We didn't call you in here to discuss another contract. We called you in here because you're useless and we no longer require your services. Can you tell Tom Swift to come see us in here for me on your way out ? Thanks."

Classic.:thumbsu:

I have always thought that these Hunt and Folau deals would fail. 1 - because partly what the OP is saying some players may resent how much these guys are being paid for never playing AFL before. 2 - because if any saints player was to change codes and play for League or Union I would never in a million years follow the team that they changed too nore the code that they went to.
