Player Watch Will Kelly (Delisted 2023)

Kelly just needs an uninterrupted pre season and he will be a very valuable player. He might not be regular 22 but he will be good KP depth which is something we haven't had for years
That’s been my view as well. Tough to judge a kid, and particularly a tall given how interrupted his development has been. I’d make the same case for Tyler Brown.

I'm still struggling to see how he gets a game given the fact he couldn't break into the team in a year when we were desperately in need of some height in defense.

Best chance is in defence I reckon

The skin on his teeth must be incredibly thin! Given our KPD profile I can only assume it’s about not wanting to bring in two KPD’s in one off-season.

We’re clearly in development mode, because if we were focused on the Premiership in 2023 to the exclusion of all else, I would have kept Madgen ahead of Kelly. And I’m not kidding.

He did do more. He actually proved that he could play footy - at least at the WAFL level.

I reckon he should of been given a second chance at afl

Was a slow burn

I get that POV even with my criticism of playing Madgen in 2022. Just to give some context from my perspective when discussing position number 40 on the list it isn’t a binary one (unlike retaining JDG). Honestly given their capacity at VFL in KPD roles I genuinely think there’s local level footballers out there that could offer as much.

That said I’m not sure what about this decision suggests we’re in development mode? Kelly hasn’t show much of any development, but as an alternative option both are list cloggers so neither should have been retained.

If we want a development option use Begg as a KPD (you’d probably have needed to find a Meek/ Briggs type at the trade table) or throw Kreuger/ McStay down back. Making it binary again I’d retain Kelly because of his injury profile, but it’s a 50.5/49.5 decision because Madgen is the better forward, IMO.

while i understand your thinking, if kelly gets dropped off the list next year, it becomes more a question of determining the order of which player jumps off the boat first. Making Madgen jump first, means that you're just reasonably certain that he wont be needed next year. In fact you could be less certain about Kelly, but he delivers the bigger benefit if he comes good. There might be a 3% chance that we have multiple injuries and require madge....and there might be a 2% chance that Kelly will turn it around. Most teams would pick the latter. It seems to me to be more about the balance between rewarding madgen's good work ethic, against giving a player a final chance. The resultant message to the rest of the group is probably more important than either player's output.

You should be kidding because that was funny.

How many games of Senior footy have you seen Kelly play better than Madgen?
I like you 76, but saying we are clearly in development mode by comparing two fringe players must surely be a joke?

Or maybe they just don’t need the depth that Madgen provides any more , with the improvement of Murphy , return from injury of Dean and to a lesser extent Kreuger, and the arrival of Frampton and to a lesser extent, McStay.

Kelly being younger has upside that Madgen doesn’t have. He’ll be gone next if he can’t deliver that upside.

Wait just there JMac. You dismissed me like a moron early this year when I said that we weren't in re-building mode.

The reality is that most clubs have realised that they need to be constantly building and painting and weeding and prining and conserving. Hawthorn being the exception, who seem to think that bottoming out is the way to go.

You've been watching too many of those renovation programs on tv....

Kellys only hope as far as I can see is to bulk up and base his game on Presti. Perhaps he can become a good negator, cos he aint gonna become a good creator.

He'll bulk up after he gets dropped off the list....he might do ok holding a bar up somewhere in Crown.

He is half mongrel on his fathers side. Mongrel Deficit may become the new mental health? ‘He missed the first 6 rounds with a Mongrel complaint’.
Geez you'd be worried if his half mongrel was from his mum.

We should shell out and fly him to Thailand for a Mongreloplasty. Get a transplant from his dad.

If he doesn't spend an afternoon next year pinching Tom Hawkins - I'm going to spew up.
Woah lets start him off on something less challenging, the Porkins skinfolds are the toughest pinch in footy!
