Will Minson

One game into the season, and some posters are all over Minno like a fire blanket. He has been crook, he's a big man. Give him some time & space to get going.

He is not fit, looked spent within 15 mins in R1 and given his soy milk episode and reported consequences it isn't too surprising.

Will and Hudson make a very good ruck combo, neither by themselves stand up as being elite but they provide some good work in close, with Huddo being a great scrapper, and Will having a bit of an advantage around the ground and up forward.

Roughhead looks an OK prospect, in the ruck and as a "resting" forward - he'll get some chances this season I think. Particularly if Will can't get that tank up and running. I think he will though, he might be frustrating but his work ethic is very good.

It seems to me worse having two ruckmen plus BBB on the ground all at once than resting the ruckmen on the bench, It did seem to work well with one ruck plus Everitt in that one game - don't know if it would do in the long term.

I totally disagree with you "Fossie 32"

I think the Dog's have played small for so long (without winning a premiership) that it might take up to 8 rounds to learn how to play tall. But so be it.

I prefer to lose a bit of skin now and persevere with Barry Hall, Tom Williams, Brian Lake, Ben Hudson, Will Minson and Andrej's Everitt....as over the previous few years the smaller options have come up short of the mark.

If I had anyone on the edge it might be one of the mid sized half forwards such as Mitch Hahn.

What's with the quotation marks?

I can't see you are 'totally' disagreeing there, having tall players is fine but they need to be mobile. All of those you list are fine in that respect except the combination of Huddo and Minno on the ball makes us look a bit slow IMHO

Sorry quotation marks offend you so much, I'm a country lad at heart and am getting a bit over dealing with urban super sensitivities and worrying if "quotation marks" offend FFS

On the ball together the 2 big guys may make us look slow. But that seldom happens.

I get concerned more about Cross going up in the ruck and leaving a ground level ball winner uncovered.

I didn't say they offend me so much, just curious to know why you would bother putting them in????

As I said we have played small for a long time and failed to make a Grand Final.

You can only keep on hitting your head against a brick wall for so long before thinking about changing something.

In the Bulldogs case possibly time to play tall

And on the park it wont be perfect over-nite or over a pre-season. It takes match practice.

But I think most of us last season agreed it needed to be done.

Seriously, if Roughy went up forward in the AFL right now, he would be no better than Minson (yep I saw Roughy in the NAB cup, he kicked one or two goals, so does Minno).

Maybe he will be a gun forward in a few years, but he's not there yet. What's your solution for NOW.

Hooroo.

Firstly, Roughy may surprise THIS YEAR, and I'll be the first to bump this.
Secondly, I am not convinced we cannot afford to have our ruckmen spending SOME time on the pine.
Thirdly, Minsons efforts Vs Richmond were much improved, and offers an option to force oppo coaches into reacting if he is placed up forward. At one stage we had Hall, Everiit AND Will in the front half, and I did not think I'd ever see Eade employing a 3 tall forward line (albeit briefly to mix it up).
Finally, the top scoring team for 3 seasons has added Hall into the mix, perhaps the small sacrifice in running options when Huddo and Will are benched is balanced by our traditional smaller forwards applying pressure (or do you suggest Will is a good chance to chase down running defenders)?

hooroo...:)

Hey OS. I agree, all of the above is spot on. The point of my post was that with two genuine ruckmen on the ground, you have to make a sacrifice of either:
a. less pine time for your runners or
b. for some of the time, one of the ruckmen playing in a spot on the ground which they're not best suited to (eg Will at FF) or
c. a bit of both

I was challenging all the people who were bagging out Will to come up with a better scenario for the dogs than the current ruck situation that Rocket is using (two dinosaur rucks, Huddo in ruck or on bench, Will in ruck or up forward).

And you can bump your post if Roughy performs better than Will in the doggies forward line this year (sincerely hope you do) :thumbsu:

The reality of the next couple of years suggests one of Ayce or Roughy need to claim a KPF post. Hudson has a year, maybe 2 left, Minson is a good ruckman, and I admit a dodgy forward, so over the next 2 seasons we should see both Ayce and Roughy prepare for best 22 inclusion, and with Will still young, we would be trying to fit THREE ruckmen into the 22. Thus, from what I have seen of the 3, Roughy looks like he could become Halls replacement, as the other two are more traditional ruck types (Ayce may have "rests" up forward and be a bit more dangerous than Will), but his height and athleticism tell me he is more suited to the onball stuff. Mind you, with GC & GWS sniffing about, who knows who will still be on board in 2012??

I too hope I can bump this...:)

He had a compromised preseason with a toe injury firstly and then the poisoning. It's going to take him a little while to catch up and get going.

It's important to get some match fitness into big Will after his interrupted pre-season. He'll improve.

I like the look of Roughy. I'd like to see how he goes early on at Willy in the number one spot this year before we throw him to the wolves but I do think he will handle it.
Exactly.

Whilst I think Minson's form has not been the best of late, I think it is important that we get as many games into him as possible to get his fitness up. Roughead showed some signs in the NAB cup, but at this stage, we are not going to make a strong impact in finals with the likes of Roughead rucking. Minson is more effective at the moment and the side will need him fit and firing at the pointy end of the season.

Hudson made a good spoil on Buddy in the backline, I wonder if he could play a defensive role on other teams resting rucks - not the guns like Ottens who require an actual defender but if the likes of Seaby or Sandilands push forward for a rest.

So Minson's likely getting dropped to Willi eh? About time. Roughead will finally earn his debut.

You didn't read the post diectly above yours? Figured as much.

Here it is for you again... Refer especially to the bolded parts.

Rocket has identified Will as someone who reacts well to criticism and put him on notice.

He was actually an integral part of the Dogs dominant general play after half time.

Had at least 5 clear taps to advantage at the start of the last as well as being directly involved in 2 goals.

Rodney Eade said:
"He might need a stint at Williamstown (in the VFL), that is where it's headed with Will," Eade said.

Right now I'm fairly aware of that considering the injuries. Had Picken and Aker not gotten injured, Roughead may have had a chance to debut.
