I have been told that the AFL will announce shortly that games will go ahead but no spectators will be allowed to attend matches.

The ODI between Australia and NZ is going ahead today with no crowd so there is no reason why AFL can't do the same providing no players test positive.

Games without crowds are far from ideal but if the options are games with no crowds or no games at all I'll take the games with no crowds option.

They have no choice, the govt has just said any non essential gatherings of over 500 people will be stopped from Monday onwards.

I'm a bit confused with the "over the top" media coverage this virus is causing.

In winter we all rug up and wander off to watch our footy teams, lots of us coughing and spluttering with running noses. Do we stop going to the footy because we might catch the new strain of winter flu ?.

We are around people all week at work, we have to interact.

I'll explain it in simple terms.

This virus is more contagious, spreads more quickly, has a more extreme impact on vulnerable people resulting in death and there is no general immunity in the population to it. So whilst the symptoms are similar to seasonal flu, it poses a far greater risk.

The biggest risk though, is if our hospitals are inundated with lots of people getting it at the same time - which is what has happened in Italy and Iran - then every single hour doctors will need to decide whether the person with severe COVID-19 or the person who's having a heart attack is the one to go on a ventilator in intensive care - because there won't be enough intensive care beds for everyone who needs it.

Whereas, if the spread can be slowed down, then whilst people will still get it, people will still get very sick from it, but our hospitals might just cope.

Yes the media isn't helping, but regardless, this is some serious shit going down.

And another thing - we haven't had a recession in Australia for decades...but this might just be it. Well let me tell you as someone who has lived through three big recessions in the UK - they're not fun!!

Ta, well explained.

I voted for no, but I feel like round 1 will be played, then the season will be postponed for a short period (maybe 2-4 weeks) until the panic has largely died down.

My main concern is the knock on effect for state and local competitions who may be obligated to cancel their own seasons at great financial cost

Can I ask, what happens to club members and ticket holders for round 1? Do we get compensated or what will be the go?

Lets shutdown the football but keep public transport running.....logic not even once.

You cannot compare public transport to footy. The cost of banning football is significantly lower than the cost of banning public transport.

Public transport is the only form of transportation for many Australians. Without it, a large portion of the country's workforce will be unable to commute to/from work, unable to visit family members and unable to attend medical appointments. Footy on the other hand, is a form of entertainment.

It will suck not having footy. It really will. But you cannot compare a sport to a service that a large number of people rely on to participate in society.

Hi folks, huge poll here. Who thinks round 1 will go ahead next week after recent cancellations of the Grand Prix and other sporting events? I don’t believe it will. Have at it
I think it will but they will change the sport to competitive hand-washing.

Although, much like football, that is a bit of a misnomer as points are purely based on viral load of each player, as recorded by swabs sent off to lab with a 6 to 8 week turnaround.

Riveting stuff.

Each club will field a team:

Adelaide Soapers
Brisbane Alcohol-Gellers
Carlton Elbow-Bumpers
Collingwood Latex Gloves
Essendon Fake-Hand-up-the-Sleevers
Fremantle Polite-Nod-With-Hands-in-Pocketers
Geelong Poo Ticket Hoarders
GWS Self-Isolaters
Gold Coast Cough-in-the-crook-of-your-Elbows
Hawthorn Nasal Irrigation, Plenty of Vitamin D and a Good Night's Sleepers

... and so on.

New coaches will be mainly players' mums making sure they scrub under their fingernails.

Then stopping football does nothing. The virus will still be spread regardless. So whats the point? To me it's more of a "look here we're taking action"

I’m on the fence. I think Round 1 will go ahead, but would not be surprised if it is delayed.

Don’t think we’ll see round 2 for a while though.
