What are the odds of stephen hill, nick suban or even greg broughton playing this weekend? Fremantle play on sunday, so the finalised teams wont come in (5:00pm Fri) until after lockout (7:40pm Thurs).

Will they play? Its anybodys guess..

Suban's position is fairly safe from what I have read. He doesn't seem to be among the worst, if anyone should pay it will be the senior players. Mark Harvey in an interview tonight indicated he would keep backing Hill as well.

I have both Suban and Hill as well as Hasleby and Pavlich. Was overweight Freo as I thought they'd improve this year. Luckily I also loaded up with Carlton players so am still ahead.:thumbsu:

I'll take that with a grain of salt...

Hey Broadside, being a blues man have you heard any update on how Fev's heel is progressing ?

he was on crutches Sunday so put him down for just 6 goals this week against the Bombers

they say it's getting better but I read somewhere it is an injury that can niggle for a long time, a bit like Libba used to when he was tagging

I heard on a TV show either 'One Week at a Time' or 'Footy Classied', that Firrito suffered from the same bruised ankle problem as Fevola. The person went on to say how it effected him for the whole season.

May I suggest taking a look at the Fremantle board.

From opinions there Suban is safe, Hill is 50/50 and Broughton is 50/50 (although a lot called for Broughton last week as well and he didn't even make it into the 25).

I would think Hill will play as he is their first round draft pick and they will want to give him as many opportunities as possible (they may look at playing him in a different role this week).

If Hill does play it will be because Harvey and co. don't want to admit that they made a mistake picking him at number 3.

Changing the role will not make him any better as he simply is not up to AFL standards in physicality and pace.

He will be one magnificent juicy pickup for next year in SC when he puts on a bit and gets used to the level that AFL is played at. :thumbsu:

Couldn't agree more with you. What were they thinking taking this kid instead of Rich (who played two seasons of seniors in the WAFL)?

Geez, maybe when they decided on Hill they did so looking at what he would bring to the club in the next ten years.

Silly to judge draft picks on their output in year 1.

Dane Swan is better than 80% of AFL players and didn't deliver until his 4th year on the list.

Wrong. Are Melbourne, West Coast, Port, Essendon and Carlton not happy having passed up on Rich since their first picks are injured/have not played a game? Dont think so.

Of course they are not......they are either injured or not playing like you said, so how can they be not happy with how they play? They haven't seen what they are capable of.

If you read my post I said Hill will be a great player.....just clearly not ready for AFL this year.

A great player...that was a mistake to pick at number 3, obviously.
You're not making any sense. Make up your mind.

Its called upside. I tend to agree that Hill, has more upside than Rich.
Rich is the better player ATM, but give Hill 2-3 years then I believe Hill will be a much more valuable player.

Broughton should play this week and nearly every game beyond IMO.

Mate, having a bit of a slow day today are we?

Which part of "Hill will be a great player.....just clearly not ready for AFL this year" would you like me to further break down for you?

Well repeating it over and over doesn't change the fact you said it was a mistake to pick him at 3 does it now?

Well, in that case mate you were quoting my wrong reply I misunderstood you:).

To answer your question of course I think he was a mistake at number 3.......howerer, we will not know for sure for another couple of year until they develop.

But right now, you can't tell me you wouldn't want Rich in your midfield over Hill? I haven't seen Hill play, but if people rate him those 4 handballs and 1 kick on the weekend must have been pretty special.

Rest easy mate.....he will be gold in SC next year.

Whilst I agree that Rich is clearly more mature and better suited to play AFL ATM, in a few years time S.Hill may very well become the better player, however Rich still has the runs on the board at the present time.

One thing that S.Hill has going for him ahead of Rich is he is probably a lot more versatile player, as he regularly plays a number of roles in the defence, midfield and forwardline. Although I don't believe we have seen many position changes given to Rich (forgive me if I'm wrong). He doesn't strike me as the kind of player that would be able to adjust his game to a forward/defender like a S.Hill/Ziebell/Sidebottom would be able to.

Forgive me if I'm wrong as I haven't paid a huge attention to their junior careers.

Have a look at this:
http://news.theage.com.au/breaking-news-sport/fremantle-coach-hits-back-at-thomas-20090408-a0kg.html

the relevant part is this:
"Some of our younger players we've given opportunities to.
"This week I'll be playing another first-gamer or two.
"It's not hard to know where we're at.
"So to draw analogies from afar, Grant should know better.
"We are galvanised, irrespective of what people want to write and say.
"And the rapport with the players and coaches is first-rate considering where the group is at from an experience point of view."
Harvey said 2009 was a development year at Fremantle after last year's mass cleanout.
"When you go to the draft table like we did we are going to lack depth until such time as those guys can get experience," Harvey said.
"It may be one of those years where we play the majority of our list.
"That's how you evolve and develop players.
"There's no better experience than playing at AFL level."

No real help thanks Mark, but it's sounding like Broughton could be in. Of course it also means that Hill or Suban might be out. Ugh.

Looks like all 3 will play!!! :thumbsu:

Stephen Hill knows what he needs to do to improve, says his coach

FREMANTLE will continue to play youngsters Stephen Hill and Nic Suban, and may include two more debutants against Adelaide this Sunday, coach Mark Harvey said.

The coach said rookie elevations Greg Broughton and Matt de Boer, as well as young ruckman Zac Clarke and midfielder Chris Hall, had been performing well in the WAFL and would come into contention.

Harvey acknowledged there were risks associated with a young team, but said selection this week would reflect where the club is at in its development.

"Some of our younger players were given an opportunity (and) this week I'll be playing a first gamer of two – so it's not hard to read where we're at," Harvey said from Subiaco Oval on Wednesday.

"It may be one of those years where we play the majority of our list. That's how you evolve and develop as a club – there's no better experience than playing at AFL level.

"We're trying to inject different types of players that hopefully can contribute to building an era.

"I think everyone should appreciate that that's what we're trying to do."

Hill and Suban had 14 possessions between them in the 38-point loss to Essendon, but Harvey said he would back the 18-year-old pair against Adelaide.

"They'll continue to play," he said.

"We need to evolve with those sorts of guys. It was their first trip on the road and it's always an interesting experience for them.”

Harvey said Hill, Fremantle's first pick in the 2008 NAB AFL Draft, doesn’t get flustered by a bad game and understood what he has to do to become more involved.

He said form was still vital for debutants coming into the side, and named Broughton, de Boer, Clark and Hall as players he was looking at.

Development coach Steve Malaxos said de Boer may need another week in the WAFL, but after playing every pre-season game for Fremantle Broughton was ready.

"Broughton's been consistent and played pretty well pre-season, so he's ready to go if the role comes up for him," Malaxos told fremantlefc.com.au.

"(Clayton) Hinkley's got some things to work on, but he's played most of the pre-season and has been reasonably good for Swans, so he's ready to go as well."

Daniel Gilmore and Marcus Drum also performed well in the WAFL on the weekend and may be considered.

However, Harvey said classy defender Roger Hayden was only a 50/50 chance of playing as he battles a minor hamstring injury.

Hayden was a late withdrawal from the side that lost to the Western Bulldogs in round one. Harvey said the 28-year-old would be tested at Fremantle's main session tomorrow.
