So Dutton has offered $250 mill for Women's sport infrastructure if elected , Albanese $200 mill and encouraged State Governments to get on board. Tassie has already been promised significant funding for the multipurpose stadium. The only road block remains the State Opposition in Tassie. Surely the increasing popularity of women's sport will be the game breaker.

Who knows a World Cup match could have been played in Hobart had they had the stadium already.

Now that Soccer has punched thru the ceiling to gain much higher profile recognition at the National and International level surely Cricket and Rugby Union will as well. Right now , in my view Tassie has a great opportunity to build an amazing multipurpose venue for multiple sports for women and men. Such a small stadium could lend itself to being more easily converted to oval/rectangular fields than Accor or Marvel .

Sure put your money into health and homes but at least put some into something that will give back in spades and at the same time promote community physical and mental well being.

Nah, there is no benefit in over engineering the stadium in a way that significantly changes for rectangular sports. It could add hundreds of millions to the cost for what might be a game every year or two that you'd have to pay for anyway

There’s no need to add the tens of millions that goes into a retractable seating system that wont ruin the grass for events that will come once every 4-5 years tops if you combine the rectangular codes. Putting it in won't draw them any more often.

Agree that it certainly strengthens the case for the stadium. Although I’m unconvinced that this will result in an explosion of interest in women’s sport across the board.

The FIFA World Cup is the biggest WC of any sport in the world and we’re hosting it for the first time ever. That’s turbocharged the interest in the sport and national team for one month, but there are no guarantees there’ll be a huge legacy from this. The Matildas are also currently ranked 10th in the world and contain a number of world class players. Investment in women’s sport is growing around the world so it’s likely that other countries with greater heritage, domestic leagues, pathways and funding for soccer will see the standard of their women’s game improve over the coming years.

With these factors considered, I’ll be curious to see if the general public maintain a similar level of interest for the Matildas moving forward. For example, everyone jumps on the Socceroos bandwagon every 4 years at the World Cup, but in between, their friendlies and WC qualifiers (early in the campaign) are often played out with limited coverage. There’s a good chance the same will occur when the Matildas are playing international friendlies and the like. Also, if the rest of the world catches up (which they probably will with the standard of our domestic set-up) will the Matildas generate the same level of interest if their performances (and world ranking) starts to slide?

The success and attention was awesome and very unexpected. But it’s the high water mark. When it levels out it will obviously be much higher than pre World Cup, but there needs to be a bit of rational thinking about this.

Nope, but they'll probably play at the Macquarie Point when it's built as an oval stadium.

As much as soccer whinges, the NRL, Rugby Australia and even Football Australia will provide games in proportion to how much dollars are on offer for them. The shape of the stadium counts for precisely nought.

Optus has a "rectangular" mode. I think it cost an extra $20 or $30 million.

You can count on one hand the number of times it's been used. If they had it for a Hobart stadium it would be used even less.

One of the A League urgers was just on the TV news whingeing about the AFL getting $243 Million for the new Tassie Stadium = WRONG the Tasmanian State govt is getting the money from the Feds for the Stadium and its surrounds which ATM is a wasteland right on the waterfront in Hobart!

And of course the Stadium won't just be used exclusively by the AFL but Cricket and concerts will also be held there!

Sorry, this is a bit ridiculous. So the government should be pumping in an extra, let’s say, $500m on the off-chance that we win hosting rights to a FIFA WC and then 4-5 WC games can be played at a 40k seat stadium? Tassie is a small state with limited financial resources so a stadium that big is not fit for purpose.

One of the stadium reports looked at optimal size for the venue and I think that it determined around 20.5-27k was optimal size. The only games that might require a higher capacity would be finals games or games against the big 4 so it didn’t stack up to have 30k+ for the sake of a few extra games per year.

It isnt just the stadium which is assessed for a FIFA world cup venue. The city is as well. A lot has to go right for Hobart to be in the running for a world cup game.

Long story short, the Tillys success will have little to no influence on a Hobart Stadium. Heck, No one is saying we should build this early for the Rugby Union world cup, which Australia are hosting in 2027 and a much more realistic target.

This stadium is for AFL first. They will be the main users. Anything else is extra but one off events shouldnt be a factor to change our plans.
