Will we ever see another "legendary" coach?

Legend isn't a word I'd use to describe Sheedy.

For what Sheedy has achieved in the game he most certainly is a legend.

For his playing , coaching and his pioneering growing the game in NSW

Alan Jeans coached at StK & Haw & Rich for 26 seasons over 32 years for 4 flags

Kevin Sheedy coached at Ess & GWS for 29 seasons over 31 years for 4 flags

As much as I hate it when supporters put forward someone from their own team, I agree that as a Port Adelaide supporter Ken Hinkley has the potential to be recognised as one of our greatest coaches. He has helped bring a massive turnaround in our on-field performances and with the age profile of our list you would expect us to be right up there contending for a premiership for a while yet. Two years ago I thought Port Adelaide was finished and we would be forced to relocate or re-brand ourselves. We were the laughing stock of the competition, an absolute basket-case. Hinkley just seems to have something special about him, and I know I'm biased but that's personally how I see it. I just think his no-nonsense, old-school approach to footy is just what our club needed. Obviously he has a long, long way to go to even be mentioned in the same breath as the legendary coaches mentioned so far and who knows? Next year we might win the spoon the way teams are fluctuating nowadays but all I'm saying is he has a chance.

Clarkson has had his team thereabouts for 7 or 8 years now and I think one more premiership at the Hawks should see him held pretty highly. He's still pretty young for a coach as well so if he continues to the age that Malthouse, Sheedy or Matthews did then I can see him picking up a few more premierships yet, whether it's at the Hawks or someone else. But if he wins it this year, which he has a good chance of doing then I'd definitely have him up there with the greats. 3 Premierships is a lot of hard work.

Guy McKenna could also win a few premierships with his list the way they're developing at the moment. Already been there a while so can't see him getting the sack any time soon just as their young players are just starting to show their potential.

See i look at these things and looking back in the last 15 years how many flags would you say haven't been assisted by either entry into the league, priority picks or other concessions. Would wipe out brisbane, west coast, sydney, hawthorn, collingwood, geelong, possibly port depending on how far you run with that. Would Essendon realistically in 2000 (even then their F+B winner that year was a F/S player) be the last team to do it without significant assistance outside of pure nominal drafting.

I mean Geelong's are probably the least tainted but the afl has had a hand in just about all of them however the father-son rule was certainly significant to them. West coasts didn't have much as judd would have still been picked at 3 with no priority picks however cousins was a father son selection so that shoots that out. Maybe port? However IMO like adelaide there was a bit of hoodwinking in regards to players holding back in the SANFL etc. Collingwood, Hawthorn both priority picks, Sydney huge assistant through COLA.

Can Port fans please stop describing a guy that's been in the Job less than 2 years as legendary? I love the guy and wouldn't want anyone else but it's cringe worthy to even suggest at this point.

+1

Port fans, please heed Jack's words, if for no other reason that he is handsome.

Ken Hinkley might be a great coach but will find it tough to win a single flag, the AFL have gifted the Suns and GWS sides that could dominate this competition for many years..

Bombers cocaine exploits are pretty legendary.

Sheeds, and Malthouse are legend coaches, while Clarkson is on his way I think. Roos is about 15 years and 2 premierships behind and has a media profile/persona that is beyond his achievements.

Oh and terry Wallace too.

I'm surprised this hasn't been brought up already but when you take a look at all those legend coaches, it's not only premierships that count but influence across the entire league through bringing through other coaches.

As for Hinkley, yes he is a great bloke and yes it seems like he is a natural as head coach but FFS, he is in his second year. What is wrong with some of you?!

Maybe we just have to change the criteria. It's much harder to win flags these days due to having more teams and stricter equalization measures in place. Not taking anything away from the great coaches of the past, but many of them wouldn't have multiple flags in today's climate.

On average a team should win 1 flag every 18 years. Therefore winning 2 of them should take around 36 years. If a coach can manage 2 or 3 in a period of a decade I think that's about as close to a legendary coach as you're going to get in this day and age.

I can't see any of the current coaches getting to a legendary status.

Malthouse and Clarkson have pissed off so many people over the journey. Bomber won't win one at Essendon and Scott coming and winning one would lessen his two premierships to a degree. Roos would have to win one at Melbourne.

All I heard was "yous".

Except the poor man will always be remembered in record books as a premiership coach unlike Brad who will not be North Melbourne's next premiership coach BOOKMARK IT

Not a chance mate. Brad is Chris without the hype, in the same way that Boomer is Ablett without the hype.
