Women's football licences to be announced today- who gets in???

Going to be interesting to see how this works out. Love the idea in theory but in practice the depth of talent might be a bit lacking. Imagine this move will completely and utterly gut any women's state leagues.

Nothing in his statement was even remotely misogynistic.

Yet there you are, don't agree with his opinion so you get triggered and respond with false accusations.
Not saying Quiv's statement was particularly misogynistic, but the persistent attitude that women's football has no potential to be independent of the influences to men's football is a lazy, opportunistic argument.

For what it is worth, I still remember the heartbreak when I was a little girl and my dad telling me I couldn't grow up to play footy for Richmond. Which was all I wanted to do. I couldn't understand why I wouldn't be allowed to, just because I was a girl. As well as the fact I would have to start playing netball soon as I would not be able to play footy once I got older.

I know some people have said its a waste of time ect.. But I just think of all the little girls who wont have to give up their favourite sport. I love the fact women's football is growing. I hope it succeeds.

Why? My understanding this competition will occur in the men's preseason, so the elite players will return to their local competitions after that.

Who do they think will go watch these clubs?

Do they think fans of Vic teams who didn't get a team are all of a sudden going to go watch Collingwood or Carlton play?

If the average AFL fan attends a senior game and the dedicated fan watches firsts and seconds games, when exactly do they think people will go watch the women's game? I assume it's going to be a winter sport.

IIRC the women's league will be happening prior the regular season, from Feb-April, so the state leagues will/have the ability to still operate during the traditional Winter months.

Good balance of Vic clubs, commonsense has prevailed.
Poor balance of Vic clubs, Geelong and St Kilda would have been more balanced both geographically and financially. Carlton & Collingwood just makes it lopsided.

Common sense has been thrown out the window, $$$ and connections all that matter.

The minor leagues will suffer big time. The Victorian women's league will go down the gurgler. Darebin and the likes.

If it inspires greater participation and some of these competitions become feeder comps, they will still have their place. In the short terms, all of the talent will be drained but maybe the product as a whole will grow.

it might take some out of the local leagues for a few years, but the exposure will cause those leagues to explode with growth

short-term pain for long-term gain, which is why the AFL is doing this in the first place

Then women should have demanded that the Women's league begin at grass roots and not be affiliated with the AFL. Let women create it and run it as their idea and creation.

Going down this path won't prove it had potential to be independent of men's football influences. It'll just look like some poorly thought out agenda being put into place all funded by AFL clubs money.

Not one bit of independence there I'm afraid.

Don't argue with misogynistic idiots.
I didn't see any hatred, prejudice or contempt of women's sport in the comment. In fact, the post commented that no one cares about men's sport in Qld, why would women be treated differently? Check your definitions before you criticize. Everyone on here is supportive of women's sport, and creating a pathway for girls - but this has disaster written all over it (but the AFL has little choice but to jump).

This is typical AFL stupidity.

Too Melbourne centric & ignoring where the growth in the women's game is.

The teams should be regional and not aligned to clubs. Qld should have three teams, Brisbane, Gold Coast & Townsville/Cairns.

Why not? Women are tough.

I think the AFL is keen to give the comp the air to get fans watching. We are all hanging out to watch footy again by February. This gives us something to watch.

Given the most elite of AFL footballers struggle in such hot conditions I don't think it will be conducive to good football or to their health.

Access to great facilities immediately. AFL coaches to assist. Carlton in particular have a great learning environment right now. Certainly Kate Jenkins on our board has been a real win so that probably is a connections thing. I note that when the non-traditional pathway zones were announced, Carlton got a smaller, more densely populated zone closer to home that they can pour some resources into. I am just wondering if they were hoping to put work in for male and female prospects.

Certainly we hit the PR circuit hard, held clinics at Princes Park, gained an existing gun player from one of the two exhibition teams in Melbourne and Footscray as an ambassador for our bid. We just built layers into our bid to show how keen we were.

Last year we had the lowest amount of female members in the comp % of membership wise. The effort from that point has been huge. Even got a female mascot to join Captain Carlton.
