It's not even a poor USA squad.
Trout, Betts, Arenado, Goldschmidt.

Their pitching was predicted to be their Achilles heel, and it's turned out that way. Nick Martinez got the start and gave up five hits and three earned runs in 2 2/3 innings. Singer gave up four hits and four earned runs in two innings. Bard has given up four hits and four earned runs in 2/3 innings pitched.

Yeah, we beat China 12-2 on mercy rule in our second pool game. It was actually the first mercy rule win of the WBC.

Ironically our second mercy rule victory over China at a WBC, after beating them 11-0 in 2017 and having it end after 8 innings.

Martinez from San Diego? He's trash.
Trout just cannot get solid pitchers, even for USA huh

A lot of good US pitchers got pulled from their squad pre-tournament, like Nestor Cortes Jr and Kershaw (had some problems getting insured to play, so pulled out).

Japan easily favourites. Pitching has been the deciding factor this tournament.

Japan's pitching is amazing. Shohei will probably pitch the quarter-finals, and the bloke we faced last night will probably pitch the semi-finals, assuming Japan wins. Yu Darvish is their fifth starter, and he's a very good pitcher.

Alex Hall is a dead ringer for James Worpel without his helmet on.
