Those that mentioned Kardinia Park are simply envious, the worst ground is not that one. Marvel has no soul, a terrible playing surface and it lacks a lot of atmosphere, but it's not the worst either. The venues are all pretty good on a whole, i suppose if i was to pick a couple then the Gabba or SCG are the ones that do nothing for me.

Nothing to envy about a stadium out in the middle of nowhere with an odd shaped ground, subpar capacity limit AND a playing surface that wet n wild would be proud of!
Middle of nowhere? You play home games in Launceston.

Nothing wrong with the surface and all grounds are distinct shapes

The really strange thing about Marvel (Docklands) for me is that in its first 10-12 years or so the higher scoring games would be played at this venue for obvious reasons - the roof protected the players from the elements outside such as wind, rain and extreme heat, so therefore higher scoring even on wet winter days.

Paradoxically though since then, we often see the lowest scoring, lower standard games at the venue. Games which have scores of 2.12 to 4.7 midway through the third term and finishes up 5.14 to 7.11 with both teams playing equally badly.

Clearly it's GHMBA, due to the ground dimensions and swamp-like surface but SCG isn't far behind, for similar reasons.

Went to a game back in '19. $75 for GA and the ground surface is so tiny the TV doesn't do justice to how short it is.

No wonder teams struggle there, a clearing kick from D50 ends up in the forward line. Kept catching our players out, although I dunno why the coaches were unable to instruct them to adapt to it, so was bleedingly obvious.

Still, I guess the ground has some charm though.

Differences in ground sizes still exist in the modern day AFL, with no two grounds exactly the same. Each ground has its own fingerprint on the game itself. From its very start the rules of Australian Football were imprecise to one of the core features of the sport. The original rules merely said that the ground should not be more than 200 yards in length (182m) and 110 yards wide 100m, with the length to be determined by agreement of each captain. All suburban grounds had differing dimensions and no two playing fields were the same. It's what made Home and Away games such an exciting prospect. You could play at the big MCG or the smaller Windy Hill, the longer Kardinia Park and Western Oval and the sardine can that was Glenferrie. The unusual Brunswick street Fitzroy. All grounds were different in their own way. Google map them and you will see vast differences in size and shape of all of them, they mostly still exist!

What odd shape? There is no AFL set dimesniosn rule on grounds. It's been in use for over 80 years! The capacity is 40,000 and the surface is fantastic, nope it's pure envy because they still have their own home ground while suburban grounds have been closed down. Personally i think that's a shame, but Geelong are located a long way from Melbourne and were one of the first clubs in the competition. This complaining about the Kardinia surface is new. I get the complaints about the asymmetry and it being in Geelong, but the surface?!?
