Worst Coach of the Past Decade?

Timid Watson by the length of the straight.

Rhode took a team that had dropped off in form and had a number of ageing players. He brought in a lot of kids and whilst he was a bad coach, the circumstances weren't great either.

Shaw had a terrible list, but could claim a lot of responsibility for where the Pies ended up in '02/'03. He would have done a better job at a club with good players.

Frawley had a great year in '01, but when the going got tough he ran out of ideas and became static and made poor decisions.

But Watson ... a team that had finished 2nd and 4th in 97/98 ... only two players left/retired .... and he coaches us to rock bottom in eighteen months.

Absolute disaster. Played Harvey in the back pocket, recruited washed-up hacks from other clubs and new SFA about managing a team.

Watson almost destroyed the club. Thank god for Grant Thomas and Rod Butterss.

I have a feeling that history will treat Grant Thomas well.

The young kids were all blooded before Rohde took over as senior coach. Despite having several young players in the team, we did not have one single Rising Star nomination during Rohde's tenure - they all regressed under Rohde's "guidance". Already established young players like Hargrave, Gilbee and McMahon were wallowing in the 2nds under Rohde. Had he stayed on another year, our club might be out of business today - that's not overstatement. He was a disaster of plague proportions.

But his ultimate masterstroke was trade week in 2003. Rawlings, Street, Koops and Morgan in, 4 picks in the first 35 (and first pick in the PSD) out. A more useless coach has yet to walk this planet.

watson needed an autoque.

if the eyes are the windows to the soul, the lights are out, there is a for sale sign out the front and the furniture inside has white sheets draped over them, with cobwebs, and rats, slow stupid mutant rats.

They must have been handing out father of the year To timmy because he pull his trousers down with urinating on his hands that year.

the guy needs an autoque to live.

how can you even think gary ayers as one of the worst coaches, he has been to 2 premlins and one grand final, i dont think the others have done that. Crows supporters have a long hard look at your selves.

I actually heard Judge crack a joke once on the WA coverage.

He said he once imitated a coach

Karl Langdon said "Well at least you had a go"

Karl meant to make him feel better but it was very patronising for Judge.

All those years of thinking he would be hot stuff as a coach.. Only to be seen as having a go.

He was really talked up when he was assistant at Carlton.

He looked really bad from the outside. West Coast were as concerned about his relationships with people in the club as performance.

Tim Watson . . . easily.

Even Tim realised he was a crap coach 18 months into the job.

The others had some idea. Tim had absolutely none.

When the coach himself says he's no good, he's no good.

Tim Watson. By a long long way

I heard a story from someone at St Kilda that Timmy had a heart to heart with Pagan and that conversation helped confirm what he already knew.

One can only imagine the cliches Pagan would have rattled off in that conversation. :D

Gerard Neesham by a country mile, set back Freo years with his unorthodox recruiting and coaching, not up to any standard IMO

Dean Laidley next

Judge ... had anger management issues.

He and Schwab were our worst two coaches in a decade, although Schwab's record is not as bad as Judge's given he took us to within a kick of being smashed by Brisbane in 2001's grand final.

Why the hell would you put Pagan in there?
Thought it would've obvious. He been as terrible here as any coach in our history. The ultimate downhil skier, great when the team's good, committed and firing, no idea with an average/poor team. Game plan and match-upsdeplorable, struggles to get the players to play for him. Good coaches play to their team's strengths, Pagan plays to our weaknesses.

You obviously never played under him. Don't piss on my back and tell me it's raining son.

I'd say Shaw, though to be fair he was just a care taker until something came along and in the meantime some of his drafting was pretty bad, and I really don't think he had much of a spine, I heard some stories from former players at the time that he was inviting the players out to his place for BBQ's. Not that it made him a bad coach or one without a spine, what did was he seemed to be more of the best friend of players then a coach.

1. Wayne Brittain
2. Gary Ayres
3. Tim Watson
4. Spud
5. D. Drum

I don't agree.

He was match-day coach in 2000, got us to the finals in 2001 and was incredibly unlucky with injuries in 2002 (and then the off-field stuff came). He gave us some of the worst and most confusing matchups in '02 though, Mansfield on Milne in that "Spoon Sunday" game?

He wasn't that good a coach (thankfully he didn't stay on long enough to give Fev the flick), but he wasn't the worst either. Neither were Frawley and Ayres (at least they reached the finals once) ... those three are aces compared to these names:

Drum
Watson
Shaw
Judge

As far as Ayres getting bagged I thought he was actually ok, certainly not as bad as is being made out, as I recall the Crows only missed the finals once while he was coach, yes N.C has done better but Ayers being bagged is a bit unfair, The worst Coach the crows ever had was Robert Shaw,

Worst Coach in history though would have to Timmy What-son? Saints should never have gotten rid of Alves what a stupid move, Grant Thomas ordinary considering the squad at his disposal and now Royal, lets hope he improves.

worst coach///hmm

all these guys were bad

Damian drum
Spud Frawley
Terry Wheeler
Ken Judge (not a bad coach terrible recruiter though)
Tim Watson..no idea
