Watch the replay, it was an absolute shocker. Gibson was 50cms away from touching him, and he turned to face the ball even. But let's call it even for the Hodge one later.
Yep
Watch the video
Especially the second quarter to get Hawthorn back in the game
Gunston gets a kick from Stevic 100 meters off the ball
Langford gets a 50-50 HTB on Gray next centre bounce to a clearance
Hodge gets an even dodgier free kick being tackled by Ebert next centre bounce for another clearance
Port kicks two, sure enough Shiels throws his arms back for a holding free for yet another centre clearance
And then Hale throws his arms back at the next centre bounce for a free and another clearance
Langford throws his head into a tackle for another free on the wing
10 free kicks to 1 in a twenty minute period.... 2 goals down to 2 goals up.

And the Hodge HTB in the last minute is one of the worst finals umpiring calls of all time. Can not make a greater case of a biased decision, esp when Monfries had Lake dead to rights with 5 secs left and not one of those umps had the balls to make the call.

The week after north lost by a kick to the Hawks, despite them having a 30-15 count

There was a few games where they got a ride that yr
Yeah I remember that game too. Was wondering when their luck will run out.

1994 prelim, Geelong v North.

As I recall, 33 frees to 12.

That doesn't allow for the one-bite-then-fumbled efforts paid as a mark one way vs the 2-or-3-bites called 'play on' the other way. Nor the fact that Geelong goaled (Gazza pass to Couch ; set shot goal) from a free kick to Gazza from an incident where he subsequently faced the tribunal. (He got off, but makes you wonder how it was his free). Nor the fact that Geelong's only goal in the first quarter came from a mystery free at the centre bounce (no player knew who it was paid to, let alone what for) plus a 50-metre penalty.

Not that I hold a grudge or anything............

1994 prelim - geelong v north

so many rubbish decisions and a very heavy freekick differential.

I still remember the umpire(!!!! not the club) stopping play and calling for a stretcher for Bairstowe which stopped our momentum at the other end of the ground and he was carried off and ran back on the ground
only to fetch his handbag

The Gunston hold/block was there and it wasn't 100m lol, Gunston was leading for the kicker, maybe 60 or 70 at most.
Even if it was 100 or 150 or the length of the G, you can't do it, it's the rules. Blame your player not the umps.
In the last few minutes there were 5 obvious unpaid free kicks to the Hawks, Hodge held without the ball (a second before the dodgy holding the ball), Smith pushed out of a ruck contest, Suckling pushed in back after kicking from square (should have been downfield too), Lake held by one arm by Monfries whilst trying to mark, then taken high and held over shoulder whilst trying to complete mark - and then you want HTB even though the ball came out the back of the pack and a Port player pushed it back in despite having 2 free players on that side of the pack to give it to. There was also the BS in the back against Roughead in there with about 4 min to go, along with the earlier bs free against Gibson.
We had the better run in the first half but the umps jumped on the comeback wagon in the last quarter. Take your teal glasses off.

2001 prelim aka Goldspink singlehandedly gets essendon over the line. I try to erase it from my memory, but even 4 premierships later its still there eating away at me.
It was so very much ironic Goldspink got paraded with the games champs prior to the 2008 GF. Was copping it the whole way round the oval.
