Let's face it, the new team will be relying on double-ups (or 'Freagles' as they're known in the west) or the disaffected ethnic-based club supporters to bite the bullet and jump on where they refused to with the Victory (why would they? it's the same thing).

Heart will be starting from too far back, especially when the Victory have well and truly asserted themselves as the country's preeminent club - as well as being the broadbased option for all Victorians.

I'm one of the supporters who would be a target for the new team in Melbourne, as I was an old NSL fan who had tried to adopt the Victory from the inception of the A-League, but have not been able to create any passion or sense of support for them. While I prefer to see them do well and track their performance, I don't get any joy when they win and I don't feel hurt when they lose.

In saying that, i'm still a general fan of the A league and watch games regularly, but my main focus is to check out what up and coming players Australia are producing or to check out some of my heroes from when I was younger (eg: Like Peter Beardsley playing for the Knights in the NSL or like Romario at Adelaide United in version two of the A League), rather than actively supporting a team.

If the Victory couldn't do it for me, then I doubt the second Melbourne side will be able too, but i'm open minded and prepared to give them a chance.

I'll definately check them out a few times, but it will be the same as Victory, i'd be going more for the social aspect of it with mates as opposed to barracking, when the derby comes around i'd probably go for them assuming they have a tiny fan base and play the role of underdog, i think what they need more then anything is for Victory fans to double up and support both clubs, however i can only see 2 things happening, they will either fold within a few years, or they will somehow manage to dilute the Victory fan base by stealing away thousands of fans who were never really commited to Victory and just followed them cos thats the only option they had...but they would have to do well on the pitch straight away though.

I was just wondering how many people will actually change allegances and follow the new team. Personally unless they built the stadium in my home town I could not change sides.

So would YOU follow the new melbourne team?

There's only one team in Melbourne as far as I'm concerned. I'll always be Melbourne Victory...

toula, I doubt too many people will double up. infact that is just plain ridiculous, what would happen in a derby? would everyone sit around holding hands like some kind of religious cult?

it's like the idiots who go for Crows and Port because "they are both from SA"

i think this new club will really struggle for numbers unless they do attract fans from the ethnic sides, it doesn't help that the ***** have been pretty successful too

I disagree somewhat.
Both these clubs didn't exist 10 years so there is no or little history unlike Port into the AFL.

ATM its easy to support a Melbourne team against non Melbourne clubs. A Melbourne derby will be awesome and see a lot of fans making there mind up there and then.
Also I think these Melbourne fans will choose between one of the team over time. Its easy to be turned off by a club over a little problem.

You are right when you say they haven't existed for long so that will help... but when the teams play each other will you just go there to watch the game? Cheer when both teams score? That just seems weird and unethical to me and it would feel like a pre-season game or something.

No I think you are right about that. I doubt that will happen.

Each team will win or lose fans throught what happens on and off the field. I don't think it will take long to divid loyalities in Melbourne. Its a sporting city.

Already 'Heart' are seen as the underdogs, and the alternative while MV successful and maybe a little corporatised?

From what i've noticed the majority of people are football fans more so then Victory fans, as of right now whether the team is going great (this season) or bad (last season) people only have 1 choice, with a new team coming the public gets an option, and one of those options is supporting 2 sides, it sounds silly but "they are both from Melbourne" idea could apply here, or people may just swing towards the team thats doing better in any given year, if they were smart about this they should put together a stadium membership at the new bubbledome and see how many people are willing to watch 2 teams and a match in melbourne every week.

As for the derby good question, i have no idea, but it will be interesting, maybe everyone goes for both and puts themselves in a no lose situation?:D

Would you agree that MV feels more like a state team as opposed to just an ordinary club? MV has positioned itself as not only the club for all Melbournians but the entire state of Victoria....big V on the shirt, the media refers to it as "our team" etc.

So the new mob cant come in and use the "we are for all" line, they just got to go about it differently, i dont know how but for the ffa to give them the nod ( will be confirmed soon) they must have something in the works that nobody knows.

Possibly.
I think 'Heart' should think seriously about names involving Victoria or South/ Southern.
One could also argue you can't be the 'Victorian' team if you only have Melbourne in your name.

MV need to hang on to the Southern Cross as well. Together with the colours and the V not sure there are many icons left for the new team.

95% sure I'll stick with MV, but I'll leave the door slightly open for the second Melbourne team. Don't give a **** if that's viewed as being "uncommitted" to the Victory, but I'm opened minded and I'll give the new side a chance.

I think the FFA are against general names like that. When NQ Fury submitted their first bid they wanted to be known as the Northern Thunder, so as to include NT as well. FFA knocked it back and told them to stick to the name of the region.

I reckon Melbourne City is still the likely name. As for support, I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of people support both teams at the start, but City will need something big to differentiate themselves from the Victory.

I really hope they don't go down the ethnic path though. There's no place for that in the A-League, nor should there be.

How far are these guys from being approved? Can't wait for the derbies :D

Whats needed is for the VPL to get its arse into action, instead of these state clubs trying to promote themselves for some reason, they need to align 1/2 the teams with the victory and 1/2 with the 'hearts' as feeder clubs. Then they need to concentrate solely on developing youth, not trying to lure back Mark Viduka. These alignments give a pathway from junior right through to senior football and a bit of a supporter base to work off.

At the moment all of the state clubs are complaining in every state that they are being ignored but apart from the CCM and their feeder clubs none of them are willing fall in behind and support A-league clubs as feeder clubs, they've still got this concept that they have to be number 1.

The other issue is i dont believe that 20k in melbourne is anywhere near exploiting the soccer market for vic, thats the crowd Adelaide united would get if we had a decent stadium. It might take time to forge an identity but eventually they will and there's plenty of people there in the market if they play exciting football.

I'll definitely be supporting them.

I have developed a dislike for Victory through their one-dimensional style of play and the sheer NFI of some of their supporters (Not any people on here, just the bandwagoners).

Hopefully we can draw a reasonable supporter base and have some early on-field success which would be an enormous boost.

I think a club like Victory with the profile it has should be looking into setting up its own juniors at some stage, the truth is most clubs would be better off without the partnership, as powerful as Victory are they still pay rent to South Melbourne to have its youth/womens games at bob jane stadium, im not a fan of the feeder option because it promotes lazyness, Victory v Heart/City should be a war with no outside help, im sure the best run franchise that can handle local rivalry better will come out on top and really thats the way it should be.

How do you know that the new team wont be the same in regards to supporters?

Who needs another dimension when you are the best attacking side in the land?

And in regards to the supporters, MV have the best in the league, so the new side would be doing well if they had similar supporters.

Setting up its own juniors defeats the purpose of aligning teams and getting the system from juniors working towards the same goal.

"im not a fan of the feeder option because it promotes lazyness"

I dont know what you base this on. The VPL teams still compete against each other they are just aligned to a a-league club.
