WRFL Div 1 Discussion 2024

What division? Unless it’s Div 2 doesn’t make much sense. Certainly won’t be premier…

If div 1 means 12 teams when premier has 10 and div 2 has 9. Just can’t see it happening unless Parkside come into division 2 taking it to 10 teams.
Only 10 teams in Div 1 next year, if accepted Parkside would make 11.

Is inclusion voted by the clubs? Every Div 1 club should vote against it.

Is this already too late for 2025 ? Would have thought the application would already be in to AFL Vic/EDFL. Been a lot of noise for a couple of years on this merger, but nothing made public.
Deer Park and St Albans didn't become common knowledge until the end of September 2022, but they had applied. So we probably don't know if it's too late yet. I'm not sure if there's a difference in process between leaving to join a league and merging with an existing club of that league either.

What a game of footy last Saturday. Have to give credit to Werribee, they looked out of it at half time and again at the 22 minute mark of the last but managed to find a way back in. I think Hoppers just handled the big moments better with their attack on the footy and class across the ground. Pretty awesome effort to bounce back from where they were this time last year plus the 0-4 start to this year.

Shout out to Harley Weston, 191 ranking points in a GF is huge. 23 disposals, 13 clearances, 53 hitouts and a big contested mark in the goal square in the last quarter to just about seal it... he was awesome.

Massive crowd and great atmosphere at Chirnside to see the two local teams battle it out. Be interested to see how that stacks up in terms of crowd numbers compared to previous years. Does anyone know if these numbers are recorded?

Was a great game... Werribee doing really well against a filthy club that cheated the cap by double at least. Typical of Hoppers.

Parkise to EDFL is still on the cards from what I hear...

Due to it being a merger with another club already in the EDFL, the normal application process doesn't have to be lodged with AFL Vic from what I hear.

So, will all the players they are signing be happy to go into Division 1 or 2 in the EDFL instead of playing Division 1 WRFL?

no idea on that front...

My point was more from an administration pov, some of the challenges posted may not be relevant or even exist if they want to move.

The same could be said in bringing Ascot Vale Juniors (i think that was the club mentioned) across to the WFNL

Interesting in that its a different scenario than St.Albans and Deer Park moving an entire club from one league to another.

It was obvious what Parkside's strategy was when they aligned with AV juniors and brought the Spurs women into their club. They've been threatening and trying for 30 odd years to get to the EDFL but without juniors didn't offer a lot to the EDFL.

Merging with the AV juniors makes sense, and I doubt either the WFNL or EDFL would object to a merger. A club or clubs should be able to determine their own future.

Problem as I see it is would give the EDFL an awkward 31 senior clubs in 2025 and I doubt their clubs would be happy with that even for a short time. The EDFL placed St.Albans in their 2nd tier on a 5-13 win/loss WNFL D1 record so should also place Parkside there as well given their 4-1-11 record in WFNL D1 in 2024.

Would be disrespectful to Parkside and the WFNL to place a top tier side in their 3rd tier. Placing them in their 2nd tier though would mean a 3rd consecutive year of double relegation from that division. Tough to sell that to the current 2nd tier teams.

The merged club staying in the WFNL is not an option for them IMHO.

The other option is to have the senior teams play in the WFNL for 2025 and the junior teams in the EDFL for 2025 as it seems a fair chance a senior position may become available in 2026 with murmurs about 1 or more of the EDFL Sunbury teams leaving for a return to the RDFL.

why is that?

Seniors, and aligned women already do it.

Ascot Vale not that far from Flemington, so I doubt travel would be too much of an issue as AV are right on the boundary of both leagues... so travel would be like for like

No good reason from my point of view, would like to see it, just think Parkside have been keen for a long time to get to the EDFL and this merger was their strategy.

Big announcement today between the EDFL & WFNL, being an agreement of cooperation for the next 2 years.

All applications for transfer of clubs put on hold for 2 years as well as other measures to support community football.

Good news for local footy - is it a pre-cursor for a merger of the 2 comps?
