With recent incidents within the league, thought it was time for an umpires thread.
This is not to be used to bag the sh.t out of umps but to talk about and maybe even encourage umpires.
Maybe some constructive criticism can be posted.
If the league does not keep the current umpires and recruit heavily, how will it be with all clubs having to supply umpires for all games?

They are not all pricks if u know them personally and no umpire deserves to bit hit and hopefully this player gets life like the player that hit the ump a few yrs ago got.

I have been talking a lot about this subject lately...

No umpires aren't perfect & lets admit it some of us would love to put their whistle down their throat but at the end of the day without them we wouldnt have a game.

If the league is unable to provide 'official' umpires for certain games then we just have to put up with club umpires. In the eyes of the WRFL whether you are a WRFL umpire or a club umpire you are still an umpire & should still be treated with the same regard.

The bad thing is that the WRFL do not support club umpires. I have said it before, they have a trainers association why not have a club umpires one too? They could meet & discuss rule changes etc, and there could be a WRFL umpire there to answer any questions or queries. The league does not support our umpires enough, they do not do enough to retain umpires that they have either.

Maybe the league should take this as a wake up call...they need to support the umpires a lot better. It is no use recruiting them & they leave after a year cos they dont get the support they need. (i've heard the pay is pretty ordinary too)

I wouldnt say that all umps are pricks, some are yes i agree but some are very nice people. They just have a hard job, but if it wasnt for them there would be no game.
As for the incident with the Sunshine player, hope he gets life ban and hope the police intervene also. Absolute disgrace and the ump in question should seek compensation.
Why is it that some people are more interested in fighting on a footy field or trying to hurt someone. Its a game we play for enjoyment but some people just wreck it for everyone. I feel for Sunshine in all this, they have been dragged through the mud for the actions of 1 player. I have played senior footy against Sunshine last couple of years and one of the best sides to play against.

Firstly I think there is too much being made of an isolated incident so rather than harp on lets all move on from a negative incident.

To answer one of Astro girls pionts - The umpires do have their own association etc, contray to peoples suggestions they are ran well, do have regular meetings etc and are proud of their role within the league.

We may see them as different but without them we could not do what we love to do just as the majority of them love what they do.

So rather than criticise and sledge use your roles within your clubs to make a positive contribution in whatever way, shape or form that you can, Support those who supoport us.

i think what happened on saturday is an absolute disgrace. to sunshine's credit i heard they immediately told the offendiong player to take off his guernsey and never return. They have also scrapped the team for the rest of the year.

The standard of umpiring this year has been pretty terrible. Seeing at least a game or two a week for the last 3 to 4 years the standard of umpiring has dramatically dropped. Whats even worse is that umpires who struggled to get a game in Div 1 for the last couple years are now having to come up and umpire due to lack of nubmers and talent.

The ones running around in Div 2 shouldn even be allowed to put on a white uniform, most of them have bigger beer belly's than some of the supporters on the sideline.

I think the WRFL has to do some major recruiting cause we are falling behind compared to other leagues.

How about offering more money to some of these AFL and VFL retirees to come down and umire in our league, improving the standards and also using them as coaches for younger kids wanting to further thier umpiring career

Make no mistake about it the umpires are the most important part of our game.
We and possibly all other leagues need to start recruiting more umpires asap and to do so we need a program implace maybe even traineeship so they can have a path to go on to either afl,vfl or just be well paid at metro level, they need to be paid a little better and not only train a little more[some do lack fitness to keep up in some games] but get more understanding of the rules and possible work on feed back from their coaches and maybe someone from each club can also give feed back directly to the umps and also their coaches.
Umpires dont need to take it as personal critcism, just try and learn from their mistake just as we players make errors in games and try and learn from them so do umpires, and just at the moment i'm not sure that some are trying to get better when making decisions.
I believe that even sometimes they try and give the side that is loosing, some free kicks just for the sake of it to try even up the game,i just wish that they could try and umpire every contest on it's merits and be as consistent as possible.
BORGY is easily the best in senior ranks a couple have also droped away this year but i won't name names,i need all the free kicks i can get.

The Umpiring This Year Has Been SHOCKING , I Find It Hard How The WRFL Can Let A 14 Year Old Kid Umpire A Under 18's Game , Shocking .. Had Absolutly No Control Over The Game ..

There is a lil blonde fella his about 16 17 yrs old umpires in the under 18s all i have to say to him is he is A DISGRACE!!!!!!!!!:thumbsdown::thumbsdown::thumbsdown::thumbsdown::thumbsdown::thumbsdown::thumbsdown:

I definately agree that borgy is by far the best umpire running around at the moment along with O'Donnel, and young Walker.

I also believe that the likes of Frogga and Portelli and a few of these old blokes are still up their in the best as they are consistent and have a great realtionship with some of the players as they have been around for so long now.

I cant say I agree with you about umpires paying free kicks to losing sides to even up the game, I just think that it all comes down to inconsitency...
