News Xavier Duursma departs for Essendon

The issue for me with this move is there is absolutely no need to move him on. And for what reason when we can do the BZT trade with what we have. If we happen to get steak knives with the deal all we will get is a player with more faults in their game. It is just ridiculous.

We don't want to stand in the way of someone becoming a better player in another environment. That is just code for Ken doesn't want him here any more.

How is he going to be better somewhere else? He will play exactly the same way, run hard up and down the ground, supporting team mates at both ends and putting his body on the line.

Nobody thinks he is as talented as Rozee and Butters but when fit and playing his role he is super important to the team.

Yes he dropped a mark once and his kicking is a bit loopy. A lot of players have dropped marks and they don't all have Karl Amon's kick. But they carve good to great careers.

Duursma has more Port Adelaide in his little toenail than Hinkley can dream of. He asked Brad Ebert if he could wear the 7 guernsey because he understood what it meant to Port supporters and he wanted to honour it. He plays with the reckless courage we expect as supporters. Maybe that frightened Hinkley.

He came back early from a PCL injury to support the Get Hinkley's Extension project and was cooked by finals, as many of our players were.

I will be sad to see him go because he wanted to be part of Port Adelaide not the Ken Hinkley FC. I will always admire his courage and team first ethos.

And I know he's not the problem at Port.

Fantastic post.

As much as I like him as a player, I don't think Xavier is untouchable. I'm also in the camp that thinks getting him away from Ken might make him flourish.

My problem is that Davies is part of the gaslighting, pushing certain players out the door while telling supporters it's the player's decision. It is exactly the MO with Wingard.

Chris Davies is a master manipulator and gas lighter exactly as you say.
He had a medical done at Ess according to Jon Ralph. If that's true I'd think he's gone.
Hartlett did a medical with Richmond until Creepy Kenny took him golfing. I imagine that's a lie because golf courses have a dress code.

Scott: Esava is a needed player and we'll fight to keep him.

Meanwhile at Port if you aren't keen on greyhounds you can GTFO

Our fans lament the lack of the hard-nosed, bleed for your jumper players of yesteryear. Not the most talented in the team but they have massive care factor which has a positive influence on club as a whole and keeps the team from becoming a bland go through the motions squad just collecting a paycheck for being good at footballing. They can't all be stars but you'd prefer this type of 'soldier' to fill the role-playing gaps than the alternative. Brad Ebert, Tom Logan, Matt Thomas, Josh Carr and Xav Duursma are great examples.

Literally every club tries to control the narrative when a big name player is out the door. It is nothing new, and certainly isn't isolated to Port.

If it is club driven they will try their best to make it sound like it was mutual and on the other hand if it is player driven they will say it is mutual too to save face.

But it is all business in the end, their are probably 10 or so players in each team that are untouchable and then everyone else is fair game.

I don't really get attached to individual players at all, so if X goes i won't lose any sleep over it that's for sure.

It’s who we’re trading him for, though. We could have just gotten a free agent like McKay or Doedee. We could have just played McKenzie, Pasini, or McCallum instead, but no, we’ll overpay a scrub and kick out players in a position we’re light on to make it work.

Why do we have to accept that dishonesty is just part and parcel of the game?

Why couldn't the club just come out and say something like 'we've had honest chats with Xavier about his position at the club moving forward and we can't guarantee him opportunities moving forward - as such, we've given him the green light to explore other options if he feels that is in his best interests'?

The blatant lie about seeing no reason why he would leave when it is clearly and obviously the case that the club told him to explore his options is just unnecessary.

If you want to talk about it being just business and everyone being grown ups then start acting like it.

I'm pretty sure we threw our hat in the ring for McKay. He obviously wasn't leaving victoria. Not much you can do about it

And why the fk would we want to go for Doedee?

If we want to bring players in we need something to buy them with. We spent big last year and somehow we need to get some currency. Trading a player or two is about the only alternative to trading more future Draft picks.

As for Xavier, he has had plenty of injury which may have affected his development but he has also been a tad disappointing.

I will need to see the deal before passing judgement.

Yeah, that’ll get his price up if we tell everyone we’re happy for him to leave.

Lol. What do you think Duursma and his manager are telling the other clubs?
No idea what they are saying, neither would you. It would just be ****ing stupid to come out and tell everyone we are happy for him to leave.

Not going to bother with the McKay argument there’s no proof he wasn’t leaving Vic.

Doedee is 10x the player BZT is. Legitimately what does BZT do? All I’ve heard is he’s not good enough to play on monster forwards, can’t intercept and not quick to play on smaller agile guys.

Lmao, if Doedee is good enough for Brisbane and Collingwood surely he is good enough for us. Unless of course its just because he's an icky crows poohead.

If you remove Hinkley from the situation, purely from a list management perspective it's seems sensible to me.

He's been on the list for five years and hasn't established himself as a best 22 player. He's surplus to needs - we have plenty of running wingman type. And he's going to be used to fill a need and hopefully retain as much of our draft hand as possible next year.

We need to start retaining some picks imo, we have traded too many over the past few years.

We don't though.

100%.

Between Duursma is a heart and soul Port Adelaide player.

You don't trade those types if you want to create a winning culture, you promote them and use them to drag their more talented team mates along.
