A contracted former pick 18 who is 23 and has played 73 games, for an un-contracted former pick 48 two years his senior with 75 games.

That isn't even close.
It shouldn't be.

But I'd still rather pay Duursma than 22.

Duurs has been on the outer for awhile. If footy clubs were high schools Butters, Georgiardis and Rozee are the cool kids, Duursma the nerd. He's been excluded from a lot of things some weren't his choice others were. Didn't go to the US with Boak, Burton, Butters, Rozee and Georgiardis. Doesn't play golf while the others are almost obsessed. Unfortunately when you're injured and not playing good footy all of these things are exaserbated.
You just described my social life

Xavier (Contracted) FOR BZT (Uncontracted) + Bombers pick 30 (will be pushed to mid to late 30s) + Future 2nd

Essendon's pick 30 a bare minimum!

This Duursma isn't one of the cool kids thing is miles off.

Why does there have to be ulterior motives to trading him?

There's two good reasons to trade him:
1) He wants more midfield time which we can't really offer, so he's looking elsewhere. Perfectly fine

2) He's under performed compared to potential and is entirely tradeable.

There doesn't have to be these other rubbish quasi reasons for trading him. Those two are reason enough.

I guess there is the perceived problem that we're trading him when his value is just about at its lowest after originally spending a first round draft pick on him and then putting 5 years worth of development into him - including playing him almost every week when he's been fit and playing him in all 6 finals during his time at the club.

So to turn a first round pick who has been a best 22 player from the very start into an anonymous plodder like Zerk-Thatcher is a massive, massive fail.

1. The “he wants more midfield time” line comes across as bullshit

He’s playing wing at essendon.

2. Also, he’s under performed after injury.

That’s hardly uncommon

Didn’t Rozee underperform until he got right?

In any case, duursma is as good as gone, we’re not going to get good value thanks to how we’ve handled it and our collection of wings is becoming a concern with us relying on largely untested players there next year.

anonymous plodder ??? Zerk is 195cms & 91kg and played 22 games this year as a key defend.

Pretty sure he will get a game with Port in 2024 & beyond, big kudos to Jason who this year has little to work with

Amazing looking back at the match day threads Duursma is useless and should be gone.
Now he’s going it’s all Big Bad Kenny pushing him out.
They go from Spud to Superstar very fast on Big Footy.

Are you sure they're the same people saying these two things?

Yes he did play 22 games this year as a key defender and managed to have more goals kicked on him by direct opponents than any other player in the entire league.

I'm not a huge fan of BZT but you are being very disingenuous here, we all know he was being played out of position for the year.

In fairness the games he got hammered in Essendon didn't play team defence and he's the guy deep in defence who ended up looking ordinary.
And he's coming to Port where our team has absolutely no history of capitulating.

Ratugolea plays as an interceptor, a poor man's untrained Aliir.

But let's even assume that Ratugolea plays full back and further assume that Bergman pushes up to the wing. Our back 6 would look something like this:

B: Jones Ratugolea Burton
HB: Farrell Aliir Houston

And that's excluding McKenzie and Williams who are both absolutely a chance to play lots of football next year.

Zerk-Thatcher is no star. At best he adds depth, he's not clearly ahead of any of the 8 names I've mentioned above and you could mount the argument that he's behind every single one of them. And it's fine to add depth but Duursma is way too high a price to pay.

Even if they were,

1) You don't respond to a player asking for a slight positional change by telling him to find another club, you tell him you can't commit to that at this stage but he has a place in a different position to make his own

2) Nobody was actively seeking him anyway so there was nothing to lose by allowing him the last year of his contract to realise the potential
