I'm counting down, about 950 hours to go.

Anyone been on the cityline cruise around Manhattan island? Deciding whether or not just the trip to Ellis Island / Statue of Liberty is enough in terms of seeing the skyline etc.

Mate - take the Staten Island ferry. It's free (something you'll quickly appreciate in NYC!) and you get a great view of the skyline. If you still want more then go for a night cruise.

Will keep an eye out, as i'll still be posting anything could happen, as for a road trip, stick to the coast, can't get lost and the scenery is 10 times better than the Great Ocean rd and it goes for 1000 miles, if you want a qicker trip go the I-5, the coast trip is quite bendy road wise, but the Redwoods are a sight to see, the amount of Hollywood movies made up that way makes the scenery recognisable thats for sure. If you take the coastal route you should be able to drive through Pebble Beach golf course, it cost 18 dollars I think, but a round of golf is US400, Carmel is a beach town next to PB which Paul Newman/ Clint Eastwood was the mayor for a while
The Monterey Aquarium gets raved about but Sydneys is better. San fran is nice too, I think I'll stay 2 nights there and visit alcatraz, and fishermans wharf, the weather should be spot on too.
I'm thinking of driving up the coast there, then racing back down the I-5 to get home in time. Not sure if 10 days is enough to get to Seattle though, might have to stop at Portland.

Free is fantastic. My mate is NYC atm and is going berserk, just cannot wait to get over there now, particularly excited about getting to see the NY Jets.

I bought a New York Pass a while ago, which gets you free entry etc into a lot of the major attractions, a travel guide and map. Free cruise with Cityline is included so I will probably try do a night one or something.

I've always wanted to goto Coney Island which as I understand will be dead when we are there, but ever since seeing it in some comics as a kid just want to go have a look, walk along he boardwalk etc. The aquarium is supposed to be close by so if it is a real let down down it won't be a complete bust.

Staten Island Ferry is not too bad, great views on lower Manhattan. The boat trip circling Manhattan is good too, The last 25 mins of it coming down from the Bronx and upper west side is a little dull with restricted views, but it starts off heading down near the Statue of Liberty and the next hour or so is pretty riverting.
I live an hour out of Manhattan but hardly ever get there...in fact I think i was there more regularly when i lived in Melb. :p

The drive into Yosemite...
I've read it is crazy busy on the roads at certain times of the year.

Does anyone know how long it will take (aprox) to get there from San Fran in early to mid Jan?

If you leave mid-morning you'll get there in about 3-4 hours. I did it on the Memorial weekend (May) a few years ago and there were people everywhere on the road but got at Yoesmite early afternoon.

Hey guys, looking at getting some advice regarding accomodation in Vegas. Things we are looking for:

-Perfect location
-Good shows
-Ideally a more modern hotel. newly renovated or newly built
-Just general awesomeness

not too concerned with cost.....to an extent of course.

Thanks for your advice

You must stay on the strip, no matter how cheap some hotels off the strip are. You will find at the right time of the year you can get some real bargains.

Not too sure about good shows sorry we weren't there long enough for that. We stayed at Planet Hollywood and IMO that was awesome with the two pools out the front and music pumping. Although I have heard plenty of good things about other hotels.. imo you can't really go wrong with any hotel on the strip unless you just get unlucky. Will let other people recommend or not recommend certain hotels.

Jump on tripadviser.com for a bit of a glimpse.

Mate when I go I stay at Wynn or Encore (same complex essentially), both are stunning hotels, have great restaurants and some good clubs as well.

"It's people like you who come here that blow the family nest egg that built this town... not this here pretty boy".

:D

Sorry, cant help myself...

Yosemite, but I nearly froze to death, don't stay at the Housekeeping place, book ahead.

Have done 3 nights in LA, took a private tour and saw so much. Even had time to get a little frightened in the evening in downtown LA as the night people started coming out of the woodwork. Universal Studios was awesome.

Then a day in Memphis where we saw Graceland. Again, had to give some guy $5 to get him to leave us alone that night on Elvis Presley Blvd. Quite a seedy part of town.

Leaving New York tomorrow morning, and then on to Niagara Falls. NYC has been fantastic. A little surreal at first but I have taken to it like a local. Grabbing buses and subways and walking soooo much. Will be sad to leave.
