MTR (Melbourne Talk Radio) started today.

What do you think of it's first day? Will you stick with it?

My thoughts:

Never cared for Steve Price. I like that they always have someone co-host with him, so that Price doesn't dominate.

I think that Steve Price should be up against Neil Mitchell, as they are similar shows. Steve Price is not what you want to hear while eating breakfast.

Only Sam Newman can get away with saying so many controversial things.

Aker was okay. I guess this is practice for his media career when he retires end of this year.

My main criticism- too many interviews, not enough talkback.

I want to see MTR take it up to 3AW, as Neil Mitchell was pissing me off. I will give the new station some time, and hope that any problems are just "feeling their way".

(Please when you comment, don't put political viewpoints. Keep politics for the politics thread. I am more interested in how you think people performed etc).

Interesting that Chris Smith is doing 1pm-4pm considering he is on 2GB in Sydney from 12-3pm.

His show can be naturally Sydney Centric in the past, so this would need to change.

Wondering how they are going effectively pull this off to the audience to be honest.

3AW won't be scared - they won't lose too many listeners.

Chris Smith is lucky to be on air at all - his employer in Sydney was very close to sacking him. Greenwood talks too much - if they actually had people in Melbourne instead of getting people from Sydney, it would be more appealing.

It seems like they’re conceding defeat from 6pm.

A nightly, 2-hour business program with Ross Greenwood is hardly going to rate its socks off. Surely they could have just given him a 30-minute segment on one of the other shows?

Then there’s an hour of Steve Price highlights, which is useless for those who already listened to the program and outdated for those who didn’t.

By the time Luke Grant comes on at 9pm, everyone’s with Bruce and Phil, Finey, or, heaven forbid, love song dedications.

Whoever recruited Martin King clearly didn’t do their homework.

The guy takes 30 seconds to read a clock, his voice is weak and shaky, he always sounds nervous, he constantly suffers from brain fades, and he introduces guests simply by saying their name (which leads to awkward silence as they don’t know what to say).

great to have Price back on melb radio, i was 2nd up on his show yesterday morning.
listened to greenwood tonight and not bad considering i'm in that field of expertise.
will keep giving it a go now that i've given up on sen.

When it is already on in Sydney and costs you nothing to feed it to Melbourne public it is easy $$$.

Apparently, I heard that he is going to be going live in Sydney AND Melbourne, and balancing stories of both. he also said he will do a few federal politics stories, which affect the whole country.

Look at this week for example. Chris Smith was one of the first to announce that Carl Williams had been bashed to death. Now, while there is interest in Williams in NSW (mainly through "Underbelly"), it is really a Melbourne story, and Chris covered it well.

Also, the Melbourne Storm rort story, has interest in both NSW and Vic. It involves rugby league (which interests NSW), but it was the Melbourne Storm (which interests Vic).

What a great week to start your station, and having two huge stories break in the same week.

Has anyone else noticed how poor the news readers are on this channel and sen? Macquarie National News I think it is. The newsreaders, who sound like they're barely 18 years, struggle to get the news out. Mis-pronouncing names, stuttering etc. Its painful to listen to.

MTR was never going to get huge ratings first up but still, 3AW would be laughing.

MTR will be what SEN is to the rest - never threatening the double figures and always behind the likes of AW, 774, Triple M etc for the footy.
