Toast Zach Guthrie - Premiership Player

Not sure what you mean by that ..but OK. I hope he holds his spot, he did enough to do that for sure. There would have been long odds that the two Guthrie would be on top of the stats
I mean that a toast thread doesn’t really mean much. I’m pretty sure I could find them for Lang, Smedts and Thurlow. All it means is a young player had a good game.

I agree its a little early to make a toast thread, but it's good to see Zuthrie stand up and influence a match. Up until this year he just wasn't big enough but he has the size to compete now, and I suspect that you may actually see a legit turning point from here.

Its pretty obvious from his play up to this point that the only people who really had confidence in him at this level were CS(keeps playing him) and his brother(feeds him the ball at all times). He has always picked very conservative options for disposal (usually back/sideways) in spite of having better foot skills than most of our players, and in this game as well nearly all his kicks were very safe options (mostly delivered to the advantage side of contests near the boundary).

If he can grow some confidence and earn some more from his team mates I would expect his impact on games will increase a fair bit. Don't forget Cam Guthrie was a whipping boy for his first 40 games, and Zac is only up to 27.

It’s only a small group of people, hell it could’ve only been a group of 1
I’ve stood up for Zuthrie more than I should.
I’m glad people might want to join my group.

Like previous said he’s a good squad player, I’ve seen glimpses and had faith.
Today he put forward an AFL performance that he’s been doing now in the 2’s for quite some time.

Lang -https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/darcy-lang.1132843/

Kersten -https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/shane-kersten.1067600/

Ryan Gardner  -https://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/ryan-gardner.1164203/

There’s also Vardy, Murdoch and GHS that I can see quickly.

Don’t get sore because a player gets a toast thread. It’s very run of the mill. See what happens from here. Good on him for playing an excellent game. Let’s enjoy that.

I'm pretty sure that the thread name was "Jordan Murdoch IS Toast"

Hes a good squad player..low wages..comes in and does his job when needed..reliable and no fuss and keeps improving. Definitely worth keeping on the list.
CS was similarly circumspect about Zuth in the post-game presser. He's a depth player who can come in and do a job. The journo asked "where have you been hiding" him? And Scott said the cliche is "it's a good problem to have" (having depth of good backline players) but the human side was that it's tough for those on the fringes. Haven't seen the match yet, so can't comment on his performance. But the coach certainly wasn't getting carried away, and seemed to be tempering expectation while acknowledging the hard work he's put in.

Id say one can see that by the time he is 25 or so he could a solid footballer. Maybe sooner but I want to see wht he plays like when the game is not moving like setting concrete. His kicking is certainly not the worst in the backline.

He's not elite but he's a consistently neat and tidy ball user which is more than can be said of some others. Also I've noticed he's good at picking out short options through the middle when coming out of D50, which is great because those are corridor kicks that have the advantage of opening up the ground without incurring the risk that the more Hollywood/super-attacking corridor kicks tend to do.

Im not knocking him , but a toast thread? I have read enough stuff on here that tells me this thread is setting him up for a bake. I do not think you would find it hard to find negative comments about him on this forum.

Good game . Well done. Do it again.

Yeah it’s unusual to celebrate a young player’s first BoG or close to it performance especially one that’s been as maligned as he has. Really strange

One Swallow doesn't make a summer but for Zach it was perhaps the Swallow that kick starts a career and he might just have landed himself a contract extension on the back of it,his game was as good as anyone's out there yesterday you couldn't have asked for much more I'm looking forward to him backing it up and coming back here with a full on I was wrong one day.But Zach took that round no doubt.

Will be interesting to see if he actually keeps his spot if hendo and moc come back next week.

In his first year he was very lightly framed but showed he had the ability at AFL level. He has struggled at times since then, but it's great to see him play at his best when it matters.

At the very least he should get another year on the senior list as a result of that game. If he gets another chance this year and plays close to that level, finals selection isn't out of the question. Well done to him.

For all the vitriol towards Zuthrie he’s actually shown steady progress. His first two seasons he was miles off physically and really shouldn’t have been playing 1’s.

Last year he was a consistent performer in the VFL, it just went unseen with COVID. He’s built on that this season and physically is a different player, it’s not surprising to me that he has had this type of performance and I’d expect him to be handy depth at the very least.

Truth is majority of his performances have been at least decent in his limited opportunities in the last three seasons. A few bad ones as well but hardly playing at an awful level for a backup medium defender. Usually named in the best in the twos, pretty much what you want in a backup. Not a world beater a this stage but would play games regularly for a lot of sides.

Astute observations catstragic with Zach now having the size & confidence to be more competitive in contested situations but also his preparedness to be less conservative & more attacking by moving the ball quicker & taking his kicks on. Hopefully Sunday's game which was by far & away his best game of AFL football will be the first major step of him becoming a successful AFL player in the not to distant future. Zach has raised his own bar quiet significantly which is a welcome surprise, so let's look forward to a bright future from him without Chris Scott (gifting games) or his brother Cam's (feeds him the ball at all times) assistance.

Good solid game by Zac. He’ll go straight out in all likelihood next week but he’s half reasonable insurance in the home and away season. Wouldn’t like to see him play a final.

I am one who has reservations about had out premature accolades but Id think it would be extremely harsh not select him , and to not to give him a chance to show he can perform again against different opposition.

If its all just twigged for him then play him again. Give him the chance to show he can repeat it.

Finals?

Id say just one game at a time. If he were to repeat his effort against Melb before finals then lets talk, but id say by then he is probably been replaced by someone else with a new contract in his pocket

We really shouldn't be stuffing with team selection a few weeks out from finals. Bring in our best 22 and save the zuthries in case of injury.
