You guys paid #9 and #10 for Shiel and #36 when all was said and done. This valued Shiel as #3 in points.

Our #7 and let's say for argument's sake we make the 8 next year just and get #11, along with #27 means Saad for #18 and Merrett for #2..

Fairly comparable when all is said and done.
Thing is, Geelong can offer pick 11 this year + their first next year + offload Constable. That's a decent return for Merrett.
He is contracted so we hold the upper hand in negotiations. Gives us two first round selections next year.

Carlton will back themselves to play finals and so will Geelong, so I think the pick difference between the two is probably negligible.

We can either take pick 7 from Carlton this year for Saad and a second rounder next year (or possibly a second this year if Adelaide give us a 2nd for Fantasia) or Carlton can split 7 into two mid-late firsts with one going to us for Saad.

If we receive band 1 compensation for Daniher, then we'd have pick 6, 7, 8 (or a mid first if Carlton split it), 11, Constable and Geelong's first next year (+ plus our own low pick) for Daniher, Saad, Merrett and Fantasia (if we get a second and give it to Carlton). We can swap one of our 4 picks this year for someone else's first rounder next year (maybe Melbourne who are reportedly looking to trade into the first round). That'd give us 3 first rounders this year and 3 next year. That'll be enough to refresh the list.

You'd have to give us a deal we cannot refuse to give up Merrett now. I'd say doing everything you can to take him from us this year is smart considering 17 clubs will be after him next year. I can see Geelong going hard for him to make use of Danger, Hawkins, Selwood etc, especially if they lose this week.

Yep. McClure also said he wasn't happy. Rumour has been going around for a while now.

I think it was reported somewhere that Carlton, Port and Hawthorn were interested.
Carlton are probably out now, but I'd say Geelong are in. They certainly have the trade currency to satisfy Essendon.

If he were to leave, my pick is Geelong.
Okay.
So Geelong will pick up:
  • Merrett from Essendon
  • Cameron from GWS
  • Higgins from Nth Melb
  • Crouch from Adelaide
  • anyone that once stopped for a coffee in Colac
anyone I've missed??

It seems that Geelong & Carltons salary cap have both increase by about $5m next year

I dont like it as much as the next bloke and it probably sounds crazy but players sacrifice salary if it means ultimate success. Geelong probably have wiggle room in there cap enough

Yes Cameron, Higgins and Crouch all have the possibility of being free.

Merrett would would require us to sacrifice our first new born but probably worth it. Cats have three firsts so possible. I think Essendon offering a new deal too might be a way of them flushing Merrett's intentions out also. Hence, I think the chances of him being traded if he does want to leave, just jumped massively.

Cap space is over rated when you can pay people in pubs and blocks of land.

not a lot of people know this but you can pay up to 112% of the salary cap if what i understand is correct. A little bit more wiggle room for the top end will help as well

Yes, not much is spoken about the banking system, I do recall Geelong were banking salary cap a year or so ago, so I assume that literally a first year of Crouch could be funded under the banking system while you wait for an older player to retire next year.

If you plan it well, it could work out being quiet beneficial.

In all seriousness given Higgins sounds like he would come on a minimum contract and you could use banking provisions to pay Crouch while you wait for Selwood to retire. Its probably possible to pull off but would still be very tight and hard to do but probably not impossible.

They have a heap of players close to retirement which lets them back load contracts if they need to. Taylor, Henderson, Abllett, Hawkins, Selwood, Danger just off the top of my head. Has to be at least $1.5m there alone and not a lot of players on the up to aborb that cap.

Funny thing is the one thing they really need is not yet on the list, a ruckman.
