I don't think every player in a premiership side is worth a top ten pick. I think Pickett out of contract would be moving for a very early second and Melbourne will be right to feel upset over it. Jordan Dawson is a higher impact player in my opinion and went for about that same price, just a touch more.

Still makes me laugh.

Told you Jordan Dawson is a higher impact player...

For what it’s worth I think Pickett stays for a couple more years. There’s every prospect Melbourne will be vying for premierships for at least the next couple of years and there is plenty of time for Kozi to return home after that. What prospect is there that either Freo or Port are any chance in the same period? The guy is an absolute star and could be among the best ever by the time he’s done. 2 or even 3 medals always looks better than 1 when your 40.

A lot of this logic can be applied to Jackson, though you’re right as Jackson is more the exception than the rule. Usually players stay. The unfortunate thing is Jackson leaving may also be the thing that breaks the typical “usually players stay” rule.

Once players have their medal it's a lot harder to expect them to take $250,000+ a year under their market value because the side has invested so heavily in other players. It's what the salary cap was put in place for.

They will always be premiership players, but leaving might afford them the chance to still be that in a far better 'set for life' financial situation. Four years of missing out on a million bucks all up is a lot of investments, arguably four investment property deposits extra.

Yeah to be honest what I posted is my own hopeful persuasion to myself! I worry he’ll leave. It’s 40 years of watching gun Melbourne talent leave that has me like this. Still, the dees haven’t been any good til now so I remain eternally optimistic that Pickett will choose to stay. And I agree about Jackson. The same applied to him.

True. If we were Collingwood or Richmond we’d find a way to keep him. Being a Victorian minnow the talent usually leaves. Even to Western Australian minnows…(I jest)

There used to be a video of Nic Nat saying Nisbet looks after you once your career is over so he doesn't need to take as much now - when asked about signing his contract extension many, many years ago. So you need a guy like that working at the club..

Or you need a billionaire family on the board who hire half the team to work for that business to top up their salary from the footy club with very little contact hours required.

Simple!

Like Woodside? We had Diamond Joe for a while but it turns out his diamond company specialised in speculative diamonds rather that actual ones…

what does this even mean? So Dawson is a higher impact player because he played a good game last night? The fact that you think Pickett will get an early 2nd rounder tells me you're way off on Pickett. We'd be seeking 2 firsts. 1 early first would be the starting point. An early 2nd is just so far out of this world it can't be taken seriously.

Same would be said if you were offered an early 2nd for Brayshaw and yes I am comparing them.

It's flawed logic, just because Sydney gave up Dawson for well unders (which was known at the time), doesn't mean it sets market value for Kozzie.

It's the same as me saying Kozzie should be worth pick 1 and 2 because Lachie Weller went for 3.

100%. Not going to engage further in any of that nonsense. Kozzie is a gun, if he goes, we'll get well compensated. It'd be a massive step back for the club though and it might create a mini shift in how Jason Taylor and his team draft because we can't continue to lose interstate talent for well unders.

Mate if Freo continue on in their fashion and we turn pick three and some junk picks into picks 5, 13 and 23 we aren't losing talent for way unders.

Though the empty hand that Port have is pretty worrying...

Yeah I think Freo will improve though (I hope I'm wrong)

Yeah, I mean what can Port give us other than a future 1? Nothing really. They'd have to trade Georgiades and Bergman and package up the picks and hand them over and still then its not great.

Freo and Adelaide might be in the same situation leaving Melbourne in the same boat as Sydney with their out of contract player.

Future first.

That ain't going to be enough, at minimum Freo would have to throw in a 2nd round pick this season as well, probably 2 actually.

Lets hope so and the other vic clubs shy away from top SA talent too..Adelaide and Port would love that

Jordan Dawson was a flanker when he was traded, granted a good one (and definitely traded for unders), but he has elevated himself since joining Adelaide.

Rankine is probably more comparable, who went for pick 5 with some late round pick swaps. Rankine has also elevated his level significantly since joining Adelaide, Kozzy has more runs on the board now than Rankine did when traded.

We'll likely have to settle for unders given his contract status, but a second rounder is an insult.

Through the middle part of last year Rankine was ranked the #1 general forward of the entire competition, when GC were pulling off some big upsets. All the signs were right there he was close to going to new levels. Probably many just don't watch GC so missed it.

Would love Pickett, looks a gun too though not sure he'll choose Adelaide anyway.
I'd love to know who worked out those stats and how

Not suggesting you are wrong, but at the halfway mark of the year he was averaging around 15 touches and a goal a game.

Seems crazy that he could be ranked number one general forward in the comp

Champion data, was highlighted in media articles and such too last year. Wasn't over a huge stretch off memory maybe like 6 weeks? Mostly his crazy high level of score involvements and goal assists I think. Kicked a respectable number himself too.

As I say it was just a purple patch but showed the direction he was heading for those who paid attention.

I'll be honest, if the crows could secure Redman as a free agent and maybe a himmelberg as well, i'd offer up this years and next years 1sts for pickett with hopefully a future 2nd coming back. With how we are structuring up, he would compliment our forward and onball division fantastically

Champion data do come up with some crazy things

By eye he was never the best forward in the comp, but it has always been obvious that he was eventually going to be a gun

Was always worth pick 5 at the very least. I think Adelaide smashed that deal
