The VFL Wrap – Round 11 2012

Starting this week, BigFooty News will be running a quick weekly wrap up of the Victorian Football League.

The VFL was formed as the VFA in 1877 and was renamed the former in 1995. It took on its current status in 2000, as the reserves league to the Victorian AFL clubs, as well as mantaining its traditional clubs and still creating a pathway for the best local players.

ROUND 11:

Geelong 16.10 (106) defeated Port Melbourne 13.7 (85)

Sam says: Another shock loss for the Borough, now they’re only equal first on the VFL ladder with Sandringham. Dawson Simpson had a massive 56 hitouts for the Cats, who took the lead in the third quarter. They’re now sixth on the ladder.

Williamstown 12.9 (81) defeated by Box Hill 12.15 (87)

Sam says: The Seagulls got off to a fast start with 5 goals to 1 in the first quarter but the Hawks came back in the second. It was close all match after that but the Hawks got the win. Box Hill and Williamstown sit 5th and 7th respectively.

Casey Scorpions 13.12 (90) defeated Collingwood 11.11 (77)

Sam says: After 1/4 time, Collingwood never really seemed in the game. Lucas Cook with 4 goals is surely worthy of his Melbourne debut after 2 years at the club and Stefan Martin is also pushing for a return with a best-on-ground performance.

Coburg Tigers 9.15 (69) defeated by Bendigo 21.19 (145)

Sam says: Bendigo always had control of this one. They now sit outright eighth on the ladder while the big loss to Coburg puts them in tenth.

Frankston 13.8 (86) defeated by Sandringham 14.8 (92)

The Votes: 3. Adam Cockie (SZ), 2. Khan Haretuku (FD), 1. Darren Minchington (SZ).

Sam says: Frankston were relatively close throughout the whole match, which seemed unlikely beforehand with a big difference on the ladder (Sandringham equal second and Frankston equal last). The Zebras however led at all times and deserved the win.

Round summary: No real upsets this week, however some sides gave it a run. North Ballarat, Northern Blues and Werribee had the bye.
