As the 2014 footy talk edge’s closer to closure with the draft just over two weeks away I thought it would be good to follow in the Podcast footsteps this week and reminisce. Before I do, I have one gripe, not sporting, but was involved in sporting discussion.
There has been a massive debate about horse racing this week and a horses willingness to participate. During this debate on a radio station one of the panellists had this to say (not word for word) “If horses didn’t race they would have no purpose…. If they have no purposes they would be extinct.”
To create the assertion that if an animal has no purpose to humans they are made redundant is crazy. It’s symptomatic of humans and our influence on the planet. Only two weeks ago there was an article that we are down to 6 white Rhino’s. We have the highest greenhouses gases in 800,000 years, we are over populating the planet placing pressures on its natural resources, let’s abandon these arrogant attitudes and actually cohabitate this beautiful planet we have instead of decimate.
Rant over, I thought back to our great club PAFC this week. What makes our club great? I see passion on many forms of social media, but the theme is consistent, it’s passion. Supporters will do anything to support the club, we pushed and pushed to get the club over the line for the Virgin Film competition. With a smaller supporter following our conversion to membership is astounding, again we support our club with diligence and passion, why is this?
Our club has always connected with its supporters, players have always respected the supporters, not disregard the supporters. When Tim Ginevar joins us on the podcast I’m always delighted the respect he has for the supporter base, not disdain, not disingenuous, it’s an honest respect. He played the same on the football field, he was an honest footballer who made physical sacrifices and emotional. When I think of any Port Adelaide Football Club Player I feel the same.
Our team is always committed to get better, getting stronger and winning, if they don’t, they walk off the field knowing they gave 100%. In our dark days our supporters lost that faith, the first time I had witnessed that since I started supporting in 1981, but every club has a dark period, regardless I’m glad I decided to support the PAFC, in sporting history they have given me a lot and to that I say, thank you.
Go PAFC.
