The Olympic Games are here once again. The inspiring stories and heartbreaking defeats and the edge of your seat action is finally set to beam into millions of living rooms around the world.
The beauty of the Olympic Games is often not in those who win gold, but those who defy the odds just to compete and the true passion, pride and respect on display is what the epitomises the Olympic spirit.
One such story is that of South Sudanese 400 metre runner, Margret Rumat Rumat Hassan.
Hassan’s story is told in Samsung’s film, ‘The Chant’, which continues Samsung’s support of defying barriers and conveying the Olympic spirit of harmony and generating cultural, personal, and technological progress.
Hassan grew up in South Sudan in the middle of civil unrest and was displayed with her family during the civil war in Sudan.
However, she began competitive racing after encouragement from a friend and discovered her talent for running.
She competed as an Independent Olympic Athlete during the Nanjing 2014 Youth Olympic Games.
In 2015, South Sudan National Olympic Committee (NOC) was admitted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), giving Margret hopes to compete under her own nation’s flag for the first time during the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
The film is the latest in Samsung’s promotion of the untold stories of courage and persistence of the Olympics, with the release of ‘A fighting chance,’ earlier this year, which explored the stories of four athletes and Olympic hopefuls who broke barriers in an attempt to reach Rio 2016 and make history for their country.
Samsung is the Worldwide Olympic Partner in the Wireless Communications Equipment category and has been a sponsor of the Olympics since the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games. Samsung’s commitment to the Games will continue until at least Tokyo 2020.
