Record: 3 Wins, 19 Losses, 61%

In 25 Words: One of the worst Essendon seasons in decades still had some bright spots with the unearthing of new and exciting talents.

The Player: Zach Merrett took another huge leap, becoming a contender for All-Australian in 2016 with his scintillating efforts. Averaging almost 30 touches a game, he became the centerpiece of a depleted Essendon midfield and looks to be the next big thing at Tullamarine.

The Roughie: Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti came off the Essendon rookie list as part of the ramifications from the suspensions, but rapidly secured himself a place in the Dons’ backline. His run and carry off half back will provide a valuable weapon, and he will head into 2017 as a serious contender for a best 22 slot.

The Win: Round 2 saw the Dons build up their supporter base and have Kevin Sheedy wave the jacket to the sound of an air raid siren. More importantly, a well drilled and composed Bombers side sliced Melbourne apart down the flanks and through clean kicking, recording a 13-point win over the Demons.

The Loss: Their most disappointing result came in Round 18, where inaccurate kicking saw the Brisbane Lions roar away from the Bombers, recording a 37-point win. It was a match where many thought Essendon had a chance, but kicking 12.19 to Brisbane’s 20.8 was the killer for the Bombers.

What now?: As of writing, nine of the suspended twelve Bombers will be returning to Tullamarine next year. Jobe Watson’s future is yet to be decided as is Tayte Pears, while Michael Hibberd has requested a trade. From there, Essendon will be looking to build, and there are certainly needs. A hard-nosed inside midfielder to take over the mantle from Watson is top of the shopping list, as is another key forward to allow Michael Hurley and Cale Hooker to re-establish their All-Australian credentials in defence.

2017?: It’s hard to imagine the Bombers going downhill from a 2-win season in 2017. Nevertheless, it’s also hard to imagine a 22 with almost half its players returning from a year off contending for finals. Still, the Bombers will be competitive. 10th.
