October 12, 2016 will forever be known as the day when trade in the AFL officially lost the plot after it was revealed that Hawthorn legend Sam Mitchell was likely to play for West Coast in 2017.
Fair to say that one raised some eyebrows. And caused some tears.
Wow! One of the biggest trade shocks ever! @HawthornFC Sam Mitchell says he's considering a move to @WestCoastEagles

Upon hearing the Sam Mitchell news. Tears. Actual tears. From a women into her 5th decade. Gotta love football. Even when it hurts. pic.twitter.com/trjwR13IzB

Can't cope with the Sam Mitchell news.

Have I woken up on April 1??? #SamMitchell #AFLTrades #NABTradeRadio

i also named my golden retriever after Sam Mitchell, so this is emotional on a whole number of levels
— Elliot Giakalis (@ElliotG78) October 11, 2016
It would be very sad to see Sam Mitchell finish his playing career elsewhere. Premiership Captain, 5x B & F and ? Brownlow medallist?

Of course, if you were reading BigFooty last week, you might have known it was coming.

BigFooty – First for trade news since 1999.
As the Hawks prepared to say goodbye to one Mitchell, they said hello to another.
Tom Mitchell to the Hawks for pick 14 and a swap of later picks, to be signed-off next week. Now the Hawks can pour energy into Jaeger.
— Travis King (@TravisKing) October 12, 2016
Ok, so now Hawks can trade Tom Mitchell for O'Meara..
Right?
— Sam McClure (@sam_mcclure) October 12, 2016
Clarko tagging Sam Mitchell with Tom Mitchell when Hawthorn plays West Coast would be funny turn of events. #AFLTrades

Chris Mayne is officially a Magpie, and the Dockers have received a second rounder in return, which they should be very happy with.
Pick 23 for Chris Mayne. There'll be plenty at Fremantle prepared to drive Chris to the airport to make sure he leaves to get that pick.
— Adam White (@White_Adam) October 12, 2016
Pick 23 compo for Chris Mayne … Freo has to be over the moon with that.
— Travis King (@TravisKing) October 12, 2016
Is there another, better, Chris Mayne that we haven't heard of?
— AFL Integrity Unit (@IntegrityUnit) October 12, 2016
Bradley Hill deal should get done smoothly now with Freo getting pick 23 as compo for Chris Mayne
— Nick Bowen (@Nick_Bowen) October 12, 2016
Chris seems a little bummed about the news.
Chris Mayne seems really happy with his move to the Pies… #AFLTrades pic.twitter.com/gCsxOGCTVK

The haggling over Bryce Gibbs continued.
Scoop McClure: "It's being reported in The Age that Carlton are asking Adelaide for pick 13 and Charlie Cameron for Bryce Gibbs"
— 3AW Sports Today (@3AWSportsToday) October 11, 2016
Tom Mitchell traded to Hawks for pick 14. Hard now for Carlton to argue Gibbs, at 28, is worth more than Adelaide's pick 13 #NABTradeRadio
— Kane Cornes (@kanecornes) October 12, 2016
NOW | @AndyMaherSEN says Carlton will play hardball with the Bryce Gibbs deal
— SEN Afternoons (@SENAfternoons) October 12, 2016
Wouldn’t bank on that getting done anytime soon.
Meanwhile, young Bulldogs mid Nathan Hrovat could land at Carlton or North Melbourne.
Lenton on Hrovat: There's genuine interest in him. I'm happy to disclose the Blues & Roos have had chats with him. He'd be happy with either
