Despite the AFL putting players on notice regarding jumper and gut punches, not one player was suspended from Round 10 matches by the Match Review Panel.

Heath Grundy, Ryan Clarke, Jack Steven and Zak Jones were all fined for striking or rough conduct incidents, while Taylor Adams and Dayne Beams were also given financial sanctions for wrestling.

The Grundy fine will likely stir up more striking debate with the Sydney defender clearly appearing to make contact with his elbow to Luke Hodge.

Other incidents assessed

Contact between Port Adelaide’s Charlie Dixon and the Geelong Cats’ Joel Selwood from the second quarter of Thursday’s match was assessed. Selwood had received the ball from team mate Zac Smith, when Dixon came towards him to pressure the Geelong player from his position of standing the mark. Dixon made body contact to Selwood and a free kick was paid downfield at the time. It was the view of the panel there was insufficient high contact to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken.

Contact between Hawthorn’s Shaun Burgoyne and the Sydney Swans’ Sam Reid from the second quarter of Friday’s match was assessed. The panel said Reid had the ball and was trying to break clear from a group of players. The Sydney player came towards Burgoyne, who tackled Reid immediately. Burgoyne lost his feet in the tackle while Reid sought to dispose of the ball as he was taken to ground. While Burgoyne was falling, he used Reid’s momentum to take him to ground and the panel said there was no sling motion or double-action in his tackle. Reid was not rotated or driven with excessive force into the ground and it was the view of the panel no further action was required.
