The big question surrounding Geelong entering the 2017 season was, could the Cats find a supporting cast for Patrick Dangerfield and Joel Selwood?
After 11 games the answer is a firm yes.
While the ‘DangerWood’ sequel may be even better than the original, Chris Scott’s team has improved its depth in the midfield and off half-back and is a more dangerous premiership threat than in 2016.
Geelong currently sit 3rd on the AFL ladder with a record of 8-3 and the third-best percentage of 117%.
Their fans would be frustrated by a puzzling three-game losing streak which saw losses to Collingwood, Gold Coast and Essendon (teams ranked well outside the top-eight at the time). Aside from that blip the Cats have been outstanding.
The aforementioned improved depth has been the biggest positive of the Cats’ campaign. Mitch Duncan’s star is rising week by week, Scott Selwood has perhaps had a career-best three game stretch since returning from injury and Zach Tuohy is up with the best recruits of the season. If Steven Motlop can improve his consistency and Nakia Cockatoo can show more than just flashes of brilliance – look out.
Tom Hawkins and Daniel Menzel are providing excellent targets up forward, and while Harry Taylor has only kicked nine goals, he is at least providing a much-needed alternate threat that opposition teams need to watch.
With another three games in Geelong and only five more games against top-eight teams, Geelong are close to lock for finals and should have their eye on a double chance.
And with their improved supporting cast of characters, the smart money says that “The Dangerfield and Selwood Show” will extend deep into September.
