Brisbane v Sydney
For the first time in a decade, Brisbane has won over Sydney at the Gabba on Saturday night, showing a significant improvement on last season. At different stages, the rain had been pouring, and the Lions were able to hold off the dogged Swans recording their fifth win of the year. Coming in the next three weeks are the Western Bulldogs, Adelaide, and Fremantle. Brisbane has put itself in a position to have a good shot during the finals. Brisbane performance is encouraging especially to their coach and supporters. Fagan praises captain’s effort in the win after the 28-point quarter-time lead and dominating the second half despite the slippery conditions.
Greater Western Sydney v St Kilda
Due to inaccuracy, the Saints kicked 1.6 in the opening quarter and again 3.10 on the board during half-time. On the other hand, Giants’ forward line hit it off with Harry Himmelberg leading the way with four, as Lachie Whitfield’s 32 scored him three Brownlow votes. The Giants made sure they were back on track against the Swans by holding on to the fourth ladder spot. After a disappointing outing a fortnight ago against Fremantle, the Giants are working hard to re-establish themselves.
Cats suffer blow with gun mid out of Dons clash
Cats captain Joel Selwood, will not have to face the Bombers. GEELONG got a blow before its match against Essendon on Sunday as skipper Joel Selwood withdrew due to pain. Brandan Parfitt, who is a midfielder, will replace Skipper after missing last week’s win against West Coast due to an injury. On the other hand, Draftee Charlie Constable will be an addition to the Cats’ emergencies after he was omitted due to Jordan Clark return.
Eagles lose a big man for Suns clash
WEST Coast Tom Hickey will not play the Saturday night’s clash against Gold Coast due to a hamstring strain. Nathan Vardy was also recalled last Sunday after being dropped to Geelong after a 58-point loss. Hickey became one of Eagles’ remaining leading lights against the Cats, through finishing with a career-high 25 disposals, a goal, 32 hit outs, and 12 clearances. Although Vardy was stable, he was not outstanding in the WAFL.
Bevo believes the Dog’s dream forward line is still a long way off
THE WESTERN Bulldogs are not sure of partnering with an emerging star Aaron Naughton or the former No.1 pick Tom Boyd what looks like promising young forward line. After a debilitating back injury that ended Boyd’s 2018 season, he was at the VFL last week, winning 8 disposals and 19 hit-outs. But coach Luke Beveridge, believes that the premiership-winning forward is still “a long way back” and the club is cautious when it comes to his recovery.
Melbourne v Hawthorn
Melbourne picked up a 33-point win against Hawthorn in front of 90,152 fans with Tom McDonald kicking four goals. Jack Viney, on the other hand, gathered 27 disposals in midfield display. Melbourne has final hopes left after to a disastrous start to the season with a 1-5 win-loss record. Hawthorn has to keep up with the pace to be in the top eight.
Each week during the 2019 AFL season, there is always significant rise in performance expectations involving brand new, young and veteran players. The game remains unpredictable as ever.
