Across the years some interesting and crazy Grand Finals facts have emerged. Here are 7:

  1.  Fitzroy won the 1916 wooden spoon… and the Premiership in the same year. During World War I with many players at war, only four clubs competed. Fitzroy came fourth on the ladder, but went on to win the Premiership.
  2. Michael Tuck has more premierships under his belt than more than half of the existing AFL clubs. At 7 Premierships, he is beaten only by Carlton and Essendon on 16, Collingwood on 15, Richmond, Hawthorn and Melbourne on 13 each, Geelong on 9. Essendon have only won 15 Grand Finals.
  3. In 2007, Joel Selwood was the only player in VFL/AFL history to win the AFL Rising Star Award and play in the AFL premiership in the same year.
  4. The highest losing score in a Grand Final is 150 points. Richmond lost the 1972 premiership to Carlton, who scored 172 in front of 112,393 spectators to win their 11th Grand Final.
  5. Non-Victorian teams have won the Grand Final 11 times. West Coast have won 3, Brisbane Lions 3, Adelaide 2,  Sydney Swans 2, and Port Adelaide 1.
  6. North Melbourne and Carlton share the longest Grand Final appearance droughts at 23 years. Neither has made the Grannie since they faced off in the 1999 Grand Final with North Melbourne winning by 35 points.
  7. It’s 1966. The game Twister had just been invented, Queen Elizabeth II had only been on the throne for 13 years, Baby Boomers were all under 25, and St Kilda won their first and only Grand Final. St Kilda have the longest Grand Final victory drought, at 56 years. St Kilda won the most games of any club between 2004 and 2012, but couldn’t win the flag in their two appearances in that period.
