The Hawks have announced that James Sicily will be the club’s new captain for the 2023 season. Sicily takes over from the retired Ben McEvoy, who served as captain for two seasons. The decision was made after a thorough internal process and Sicily will be supported by co-vice captains Luke Breust and Dylan Moore.
The six-man leadership group, known as “Moorditj Kuda,” which translates to “solid brothers” in the Noongar language, will also include Sam Frost, Jarman Impey, and Mitch Lewis. Sicily, who was drafted with pick 56 in the 2013 national draft, has 115 games and nine seasons under his belt. He was the interim captain in 2022 when McEvoy was sidelined with a neck injury, and was awarded the Peter Crimmins Medal as Hawthorn’s best and fairest player for the 2022 season.
Hawthorn CEO Justin Reeves praised Sicily for his leadership qualities and commitment to the club, saying he was the right person to lead the team into the future. Luke Breust was also recognized for his 14 seasons at Hawthorn and his role as a role model for the young players, while Dylan Moore was praised for his work ethic and respect among the Hawthorn community.
Sicily expressed his excitement about the opportunity to captain the team, saying he feels privileged and supported by the players, coaches, family, and friends. The team is eager to take their game to another level in 2023 and Sicily can’t wait to get started. Hawthorn will open their 2023 campaign against Essendon on March 19th at the MCG.
