The Richmond Football Club has announced that Dylan Grimes and Toby Nankervis will continue to serve as co-captains for the 2023 season. The decision was made after a review process that involved multiple stages of voting, discussion, and evaluation. The process was based on criteria developed by the playing group and was conducted in collaboration with the club’s Head of Leadership Development, Shane McCurry.
Nankervis and Grimes were formally appointed as co-captains last year, becoming the club’s first-ever co-captains in VFL/AFL history. The recent process has confirmed the decision.
Nankervis, who is 28 years old, played in all 23 matches last season, finishing in eighth place in the Jack Dyer Medal. He is known for his gladiatorial style of play and attack on the ball, and will continue to play an important role in Richmond’s midfield.
Grimes, who is 31 years old, is a two-time winner of the Francis Bourke Award, which recognizes a player who embodies the values of the playing group. He is a consistently outstanding defender who has thrived with extra leadership responsibilities.
According to Richmond General Manager – Football Performance, Tim Livingstone, Grimes and Nankervis have flourished as leaders while continuing to set high standards. He added “Together they are great drivers of our culture and values and excellent contributors on and off the field.”
The Richmond Football Club opens its 2023 AFL campaign on March 16 against the surging Blues at the MCG.
