Update:

Former Adelaide Crows captain Rory Sloane has announced his retirement from AFL, ending a remarkable career that spanned 255 games and 16 years with the club.

Sloane’s decision comes after he underwent eye surgery for a detached retina during the pre-season, marking the second time he’s had to undergo such a procedure. Concerns about the potential risk to his vision led to his retirement, despite being physically fit and mentally prepared to return to the field.

In his retirement statement, Sloane expressed gratitude for his time at Adelaide, highlighting the special moments he experienced both on and off the field. His contributions to the club included two best and fairest awards, an All Australian selection in 2016, and being named the AFLPA’s Most Courageous Player in 2017.

Adelaide Crows coach Matthew Nicks praised Sloane’s leadership, positivity, and care for others, emphasizing his impact both on and off the field. The Crows community will miss Sloane’s presence, along with his family, and wishes them all the best for the future.

Sloane’s retirement marks the end of an era for Adelaide, as they bid farewell to a player who exemplified courage, resilience, and dedication throughout his illustrious career.

Original post:

Adelaide Crows’ veteran Rory Sloane is facing speculation about his future in football as concerns mount over a significant eye injury that could have lasting repercussions.

Channel 9’s Tom Morris recently shed light on this development during The Footy Furnace, indicating that those close to the 34-year-old foresee a possible retirement at the end of the current season.

Morris remarked, “There are people around Rory Sloane now who do expect him to retire. The reason is this eye injury is potentially got a debilitating effect on the rest of his life and there’s a view from people around Rory that is it worth the risk, of playing potentially SANFL and risking his eyesight for the rest of his life.”

While no official announcement has been made, Sloane’s absence from physical contact during training and his use of protective goggles have raised concerns about the severity of his condition.

The injury, a detached retina, has been described by Sloane himself as a challenging ordeal. In a candid Instagram post, he likened the process of treating it to a delicate restoration task, involving injections and a gas bubble to ensure the retina remains in place.

Sloane’s career has been marked by resilience and determination, earning him recognition as a key player for the Crows. However, his recent string of injuries, including the eye issue and a previous ACL tear in 2022, has cast doubt on his ability to continue playing at the highest level.

Having played 255 games for Adelaide since his debut in 2008, Sloane’s potential retirement would mark the end of an era for the club and its fans. His contributions, both on and off the field, have made him a respected figure in the AFL community.

As Sloane navigates this challenging phase in his career, the football world watches with admiration and hopes for the best possible outcome for the courageous midfielder.
