The AFL has issued a lifetime ban to a patron who threw a bottle that struck a Goal Umpire during Sunday afternoon’s match at Marvel Stadium.
The incident took place in the second quarter when the patron threw a bottle from behind the goals, hitting Goal Umpire Steven Piperno in the back of the head. Piperno had to leave the match and received medical attention.
Following an investigation by Victoria Police, the individual was charged with multiple offences, including recklessly causing injury, discharge of a missile, and unlawful assault. The patron, who was previously a three-game Carlton member, is now banned for life from attending any AFL or AFLW matches and is no longer eligible to purchase any kind of membership. The court case is scheduled for November 1, 2024, at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.
AFL General Counsel Stephen Meade condemned the incident, stating, “Our clear message is this—what we witnessed on Sunday is not acceptable and it never will be. We have the best fans in the world, but if you choose to assault someone who is doing their job, then you will lose the privilege of being able to attend the footy.”
Meade also expressed gratitude to the fans who helped identify the bottle thrower and to Victoria Police for their swift action. “We are glad Steven was not seriously hurt and we look forward to seeing him umpire in this year’s finals series,” he added.
This incident serves as a reminder that the AFL will take strong action against anyone who jeopardizes the safety of players, officials, or fans at its events.
