The Greater Western Sydney (GWS) Giants have confirmed that 20-year-old wingman Cooper Hamilton will not be offered a contract for the 2025 AFL season. The decision comes after Hamilton struggled to secure a regular spot in the senior side despite showing promise early in his career.

GWS will definitely miss him!

Background and Career Highlights

Cooper Hamilton began his football journey with the Bendigo Pioneers in the NAB League, where he quickly showcased his skills as a reliable and hard-working player. He also represented the Colbinabbin Football Club in the Heathcote District Football League (HDFL), further honing his craft. His standout performances caught the attention of AFL recruiters, leading to his selection by the Greater Western Sydney Giants with the 13th pick in the 2021 Rookie Draft.

Upon joining GWS, Hamilton immediately made an impression with his endurance and work ethic, smashing the club’s 2km time trial record during the 2022 pre-season. His versatility allowed him to transition from a defensive role to playing on the wing, where his running capacity was an asset to the team. Hamilton made his AFL debut in Round 7 of the 2022 season against Adelaide, contributing 12 disposals and five tackles in a solid 59-point win.

Despite his promising debut, Hamilton struggled to secure a consistent place in the Giants’ senior lineup, managing only eight games over two seasons (2022 and 2023). While his on-field opportunities were limited, Hamilton became a key figure off the field, featuring regularly in the club’s media content, where he showcased his personality and became a fan favorite.

Reasons for Departure

Though promising, Hamilton faced tough competition for spots within the Giants’ lineup and did not feature in any senior games during the 2024 season. GWS Football Executive Jason McCartney praised his contribution to the club, both on and off the field, especially in his role within the club’s media team, but the decision was made not to extend his contract as the Giants restructure for the future.

Club’s Farewell

Jason McCartney, GWS Giants’ Executive General Manager of Football, praised Hamilton for his dedication and service to the club, both on and off the field. “It’s always a tough time of the year when we need to say farewell to good people, but unfortunately we didn’t have a list spot for Cooper moving forward,” McCartney stated.

Future Prospects

Hamilton’s future in AFL remains uncertain. With his elite endurance and versatility, he could be an attractive prospect for clubs looking to strengthen their depth, particularly in rebuilding teams such as North Melbourne or Hawthorn, which are seeking young talent. Alternatively, Hamilton might explore opportunities in state leagues like the SANFL or WAFL, where many delisted AFL players continue their careers and aim for a second chance at the top level.

Hamilton’s departure marks another shift as GWS looks to reshape its list for 2025, but his athletic ability and commitment could see him return to AFL ranks with the right opportunity.
