The Australian Football League has launched an investigation into the behaviour of several Greater Western Sydney (GWS) Giants players during an end-of-season party. The probe centres around reports of inappropriate costumes and skits that took place at the post-season event.

Journalist Mitch Cleary reported that multiple players are potentially facing AFL sanctions related to what has been described as “highly inappropriate” conduct.

“It’s understood the dress-ups theme was celebrity couples… with activities related to that,” Cleary said.

While there were reportedly no members of the public involved and the activities remained within the team, the AFL and the GWS Giants became aware of the situation following an anonymous tip-off last month. Some players were overseas at the time and have only recently been informed of the investigation.

Players to Respond to Allegations

The players involved will be given the opportunity to respond to the allegations of disrespectful behaviour. Both the club’s integrity unit and the AFL’s integrity unit are collaborating on the investigation to ensure a thorough and fair process.

In a brief statement, the GWS Giants acknowledged the ongoing investigation:

“The club will make no further comment until the outcomes of the investigation have been finalized.”

Potential Consequences

Depending on the findings, the Giants may face the prospect of starting the 2025 season without some players. Others could be subjected to financial penalties. The matter is now fully in the hands of the AFL, and any disciplinary actions will be determined following the completion of the investigation.

AFL’s Stance on Player Conduct:

The AFL maintains strict guidelines regarding player conduct, both on and off the field. This investigation underscores the league’s commitment to upholding these standards and addressing any actions that may bring the game into disrepute.
