Sydney Swans veteran Luke Parker has officially requested a trade to North Melbourne, marking the end of an illustrious 14-year career with the Swans. This decision follows Sydney’s crushing 60-point loss in the AFL Grand Final to the Brisbane Lions. Parker, 31, has been an integral part of the club, playing 293 games since being drafted with pick 40 in 2010. He was a member of the Swans’ 2012 Premiership team and is a three-time Bob Skilton Medallist, highlighting his importance to the team over the years.
Parker’s decision to seek a trade comes despite being contracted with Sydney until the end of 2025. His move will be negotiated during the 2024 AFL Trade Period, which opens on October 7. Although his departure is bittersweet, Parker expressed deep gratitude for his time in Sydney. He reflected on how moving to the city at 19 changed his life, leading him to meet his wife and form lifelong bonds with teammates. He called the decision to leave one of the toughest choices he’s ever made.
The veteran midfielder has also won the Brett Kirk Medal five times, awarded for best-on-ground performances in Sydney Derbies, further solidifying his reputation as one of the club’s all-time greats. He has played in 26 finals throughout his career, including four Grand Finals, with his leadership and resilience becoming trademarks of his tenure.
Sydney coach John Longmire paid tribute to Parker, describing him as one of the most competitive and hard-working players the club has ever seen. Longmire emphasized Parker’s consistency and ability to lead, qualities that made him a fan favorite and a true Swans champion.
With Parker’s transition to North Melbourne, he will bring invaluable experience to a rebuilding side, offering leadership and mentorship to a young Kangaroos squad.
