The AFL world is in mourning after the news that St Kilda legend Danny Frawley had passed away in a single car accident earlier today. He died only a stones throw from his famous Bungaree potato farming roots.
Frawley, or Spud as he was affectionately known, was one of those rare people in football who cut through the tribal warfare of club land. Put simply, everyone loved him. He knew footy and he loved footy but he also knew how to make everyone laugh. Not afraid to take the piss out of himself, his many skits on Fox Footy’s Bounce program will live on in people’s memories for a long time to come.
He played 240 games for St Kilda, of which 177 were as captain. He coached at Richmond for five seasons, including during the famous incident where five tonnes of chook poo were dumped on the doorstep of the Punt Rd oval! He is a St Kilda Hall of Famer and was a founding member of the Fox Footy program Bounce, which has now been running for 13 years.
We didn’t know Spud personally but a quick browse of Twitter and BigFooty and it doesn’t take long to get a picture of the impact Frawley had on so many people. And on TV tonight, personality after personality struggled to contain their grief as they reported on the death or told stories of his life. He clearly had a profound affect on the Fox Footy team particularly.
So rather than rattle on about a legend we only knew through the media and his amazing playing days, here is a selection of Tweets we felt best reflect the loss felt today.
